Using the Kettle for boiling water

Anyone ever boil potatoes (or anything else) on the kettle?
gonna have the grill fired up to cook some flank steak. Got me wondering why not just make the mashed taters on there too?
I assume I can get it plenty hot enough, for long enough, to boil some potatoes, right...

I don’t see why not. Should be fine.

Distance from coals to the pot is the only issue I can see.

Try it and let us know how it works.

I'd bank coals on each side and put the tater pot right between all the way against one side. Put the cooking grate on then cook the flank steak above the empty spot. Ought to work just fine. AND add moisture for the beef.

            🤔
Hadn't thought of it that way.
Cast iron pot right on the coal grate

I like the sound of that. Boiled BBQ/grill potatoes

For added flavor, put onions in the pan with the potatoes to make the eyes of the potatoes cry. Then you can boil them in their own tears.

I try and cook anything I can outside this time of year, to keep the house cooler.

I've fried in a dutch oven on my kettle, using the SNS. I controlled temperature by moving the dutch oven more or less over the SNS, which was full of hot coals. Unless you have a SNS or Vortex, the issue as others have said may be the distance from the coals to the bottom of the pot. Boiling water relies on some direct conduction of heat. If you are close to the coals it will boil pretty fast. If you are 6 inches from them, even inside a closed 350F kettle, it will take forever to get to a boil.

I've never tried boiling anything on my kettle but as others have said if the grill temps are right it should work. I have cooked a fair amount of flank, skirt, and flatiron steak on the weber and I have found they all cook fairly fast to rare/med rare, <10 mins depending on the thickness. Boiled potatoes will likely take longer (they do on the stovetop.) You may want to put the potatoes on before the steak and see if you can get them all to finish about the same time. Let us know how it turns out.

My initial thought was to flip the vortex upside down, and boil the potatoes over that. When finished, pull them off and let them sit in the hot water while cooking the steak.
when steak is finished and resting, mix up the mashed taters...
Gonna give it a shot...prolly not this weekend but soon..

I think that will work just fine.
