Komodo Kamado offers a gas burner assembly for at least one of their models.Originally posted by Thunder77 View PostInteresting, but they are not the first with this idea. Vision Grills has a kamado that they have developed a slide in gas burner for. So you can do either the charcoal or gas, depending on your preference that day. I like the look of this one, though!

What I find most interesting about this design is that by using gas Primo can limit the combustible fuel, which theoretically means you can have higher airflow. In my opinion low airflow is what makes a Kamado a less than ideal smoker.Originally posted by Spinaker View PostI would assume it no longer has a manual exhaust system. So I wonder how they put that together with the ceramic dome. This is gonna be interesting to see. There are a lot of new, exciting projects in the works in the world of BBQ.
So in a normal charcoal kamado you have enough charcoal in the cooker to go the entire cook. That charcoal is only prevented from burning due to airflow restrictions. So you have to keep airflow to a minimum of you'll overheat your cooker.
Now with gas you are only introducing a small amount of gas into the cooker at a time, so you can ramp up the airflow without getting a much bigger fire. This should allow for high airflow and high heat.
Now the question is can this setup still get good smoke? Propane burning isn't good for smoke so they'll have to have figured out a way to get wood burning at high temps for good smoke flavor.
Sooooo, this cooker is very interesting!

I'll get around to untarping mine and getting some pics. IF I remember and it was a log time ago that I last used it? It has a bottom vent in the back. So I guess intake is still from the bottom and exhaust through the top. This new one looks like a cool deal. My very favorite BBQ appliance has always been the BGE--but I have a composite deck and I just can't bring myself to use it on there. The Primo 2000 was a long shot to have a ceramic on the deck next to the house but it either didn't work out or I just wasn't patient enough to learn to use it properly. Patience has never been my strong suit.
