So I occasionally cruise the classifieds/craigslist/etc for people selling grills or charcoal cheap (that's how I got my 22" kettle!), and saw a dude selling kiln dried oak for 30 bucks (CDN) for a 30 pound bag that he recommends for firewood or smoking as apparently burns for forever or whatever. Anyhoo not exactly cheap but I figured why the hell not, try it once anyway and see what's up. Can't be any worse than chunks from Weber in plastic bags.
Anyway buddy must be a cabinet maker or some damn thing...didn't mention a thing in the ad about the oak being planed and perfectly square, and with some slightly wider pieces that were actually pretty nice looking. I happen to have a woodshop in the house so there were 4-5 that I couldn't bring myself to burn that I don't even have a use for but it just seemed silly to toss on the coals. So always check with the locals, you never know what you might turn up!
