Are you talking just for smoke, or in place of charcoal? If the first, I can't say definitively, but most fruit wood is nice tasting for smoke. If the second, I've never run the BGE just on wood, so can't say at all.

Thank you charcoal here in Australia is hard to get and expensive I have 2 fig trees in my backyard (fruit) so have a ready supply
