Madrone Wood: Thoughts for use in the KBQ?

I’ve got some beautiful madrone wood rounds from a buddy of mine, which is apparently a pretty decent hardwood if you listen to the old internet. Has anyone ever smoked with it before? I’ve got a KBQ, wondering how it will do, how it will split, etc. for splitting, do you typically let it dry out before splitting or do it fresh?

I am going to take a run at these with the old sledgehammer and see if the combination of dad strength and a youngish back will carry me to glory!

I wish I could try it but it would never survive in MN. 😂

From a firewood forum I frequent, I know people have a ton of trouble splitting it when it’s dried out, as it tends to warp severely.

It’s really hard and burns awesome. People seem to be really happy when they get a green load of that stuff.

I would give it a run in the KBQ. I bet you will have longer times in between fill ups in the firebox. Let us know how it goes. And I’d love to see some pictures of the wood, if you have the chance.

I'd look at getting a Fiskars Splitting Maul. 😈 It is pretty cheap and you can get through just about anything. Not great for swinging all day, but when you need to split a tough round, it is great.
