Yellow Colored Hickory Chips from LSG?

    Hi All!

I just received my first box of hickory wood chips from Lone Star Grillz to try in my new LSG 36" Pellet Smoker (its been awesome so far !). Upon receiving the chips I noticed they have a yellowish tinge and my wife noted they have a smell similar to pumpkin. So my questions ... has anyone else used LSG hickory chips and do they have the same yellowish color? Should I be concerned? I did email Chris at LSG and he said - if I ordered hickory then thats what I got.

See the picture below where I have a hickory split and hickory chips from 2 other sources and they all look very different compared to the lsg chips on the right side of the picture.

Would appreciate any feedback from the more experienced folks on this amazing forum!

Eric, it was the dog's favorite tree!

I sure like the KBQ you forced me to buy. Did not use it much this summer, due to burn bans. Some photos show KBQ's with coil handles at the upper corners of the door. You know anything about them?

HI Phil ! Glad to know the KBQ is getting some use and enjoyment - even if its not as much as you would prefer! I have seen the handles and considered it before, not for really pulling the unit around as that is easy with the wheels, but the handles seem to serve the purpose also of keeping the door from resting on the hinge as the length of handle will make it so the door when open is resting on the end of the handles touching the ground. I dont recall if anyone sells a kit for these but those coiled handles can be found in many places and I see LavaLock as a brand often for stuff like this. Hope your theory about the wood is not true!! HaHa!

I've seen the "same" wood types have different hues over the years too, and I attribute it to the where it was grown, the minerals in the soil, climate perhaps, etc. I don't have a scientific explanation beyond that, but I wouldn't worry. The only wood I've seen that was pale yellow, noticeably, is orange wood. But if it tastes good, it's good!

Yeah I've seen hickory that color. Especially cabinet grade untreated hickory.

When in doubt I just light a piece of it and see if it smells like hickory (or whatever type of wood) burning.
