I just returned from Home Depot, while there I thought I’d check out the BBQ area. I’ll tell ya one thing, Kingsford and HD are sure proud of their wood chunks! I couldn’t believe what they’re asking for a small bag of hickory chunks!….almost $17., not just hickory but all their flavors. Academy has B & B hickory wood chunks for $5.99 per bag, not only cheaper but it’s a bigger bag! The Kingsford is 350 cubic inches per bag and the B & B is 549 cubic inches of wood per bag. Kroger isn’t much better either, they’re $12.99 per bag.
Another reason to shop Academy if you’re near one.
HOME DEPOT WAS ALMOST 3X THE PRICE FOR A SMALLER BAG THAN ACADEMY!
ACADEMY’S BAGS ARE ALMOST 200 CI MORE AND ONLY $5.99

Holy cow! Ridiculous. I only use wood chunks with my Vortex or SnS insert and thankfully I have a woodworking shop. I use only hardwoods so I have an endless supply of cut offs to use in the kettle. 👍😊
Come on over and chop my neighbors hickory trees down! Took out my jeep window with a nut and it’s full of squirrels planting trees in my yard!
I’ll let ya know when he’s out 😁
If not cooking outdoors, I am cooking on the stovetop with my 14" carbon steel wok, 12" CI skillet, or in the oven with my two Lodge CI pizza pans, or two dutch ovens. I've also got a nifty Lodge carbon steel grill pan that rocks for veggies outdoors.
If I was not so lazy, I would dig into the pile of firewood, and pick out oak and hickory that hasn't started rotting yet, and cut it and split it down for chunks small enough for smoking on the kettle and kamado. But that's work, so I have an assortment of those B&B wood chunks in my backyard shed...
Yeah, it is a lot of work…and I don’t have the necessary tools for it either. I’m not gonna invest in all that I’d need, to go source and then split/cut wood. A bag will last me 3 or 4 months. I knew Academy was the cheapest, but I was actually shocked that HD and Kingsford would ask that much for frikkin wood.
Scotch: Current favorite- The Arran (anything by them), Glenmorangie 12yr Lasanta, sherry cask finished. The Balvenie Double Wood, also like Oban 18yr, and The Glenlivet Nadurra (Oloroso sherry cask finished) among others. Neat please.

Yeah if you don't have access to wood to make your own chunks you're better off just ordering from fruitawoodchunks.com or similar in my opinion (their "U pick 'em" option seems to be the best deal). Bags of chunks at those stores are after the unaware backyard grill warriors, not us seasoned folk wise to their ways.
