I had a country home that had dozens and dozens of black walnut trees. It makes great firewood and great boards. I had a few fall down during 2 extreme wind storms and a saw mill came and removed them for free and what they couldn't use, they gave back to me in fire wood.

Anyhow Black Walnut is not the best for smoking food. There are toxins called juglones that prevent certain plants from growing near them. Some gardens planted too near black walnut trees do not perform well.

I have used black walnut for smoking some chicken and a small pork shoulder. It wasn't bad but not as good as other species of wood.

I would just stick to plain old firewood.

I love the smell of Black Walnut smoke! There is a sweet richness, almost like toasted marshmallows. Makes great fires for heat, as well.

I have used well-seasoned BW mixed with other woods to kick up the smokiness on pork shoulder, turkey, pork chops, etc. Used alone, I think it would overpower the other flavors of the rub and the meat.

I was nearly strung up at a work party in Kentucky when I mentioned burning Black Walnut. I had one friend offer to drive to my house (in Iowa) to get it, until I mentioned it all ready had been bucked and split. I have learned to never mention burning BW for heat in mixed company...

I have a duplicate-carver. Oh the gunstocks and claw foot table legs I could have made with a tree like that near me.

I was just thinking of that. I'd take a stave or two. Black walnut on a model 92 would be sweet. My bokken I had to make for my 1st kyu belt in aikijujitsu I made from black walnut. I made a 2nd one from an old bodark fencepoart that is tough as nails but ugly as sin. Also, black walnut is toxic enough that you can use the juice from crushed green black walnuts to cure ringworm, athletes foot, or cause fish to float to the surface in a dammed up creek.

Yep. Every part of a Black Walnut, especially the buds, roots, and nut hulls, contains juglone. That is why many plants die if planted too close to them. Most people won’t notice any effects but sensitive people might get stomach issues eating smoked food.

Black walnut trees produce a toxic substance (called juglone) that prevents many plants from growing under or near them. Learn more about this compound and how to work around it in this factsheet.
