    Bark removal

Was gifted some limbs from a friend's sweet cherry tree..
some of them have some form of fungal growth on them.
Any thoughts on best way to remove the bark?
    Is it even salvageable?
Or, am I better off just burning it in the fire pit?
Hoping i can find a way to use it because my friend says he has plenty more if I want it...

Lichens and moss on tree bark aren’t harmful. As you season the wood it will also dry up. A stiff brush will remove it once dried. As the wood seasons, in many species, the bark will become looser and you will be able to remove the bark by hand. This is true of many woods but I do have some branches from some fruit trees that are still firmly attached even after months of drying.

Yeah I don't even worry about it. Oak, hickory,, mesquite,, and pecan the bark often falls off, fruit trees it almost never does. Almond is in the fruit tree category as far as bark goes.

I try to remove what I can with my hand (easier as it dries). But I burn it in the offset.

And I thought the bark ended when the animal dies.

        🤣
Remove it so I don't have to share it with anyone else, of course 😆

I burn seasoned hickory in my KBQ, and by the time I’ve split it and cut it to size most of the bark has fallen off. Don’t know if fruit wood is similar or not.

I find that cherry bark peels off pretty easily after cutting to size and aged.

I don’t worry about that. My oak and pecan trees both have it on them. I can’t tell any difference in smell or taste.

Use it bark, wood and lichens and all, as long as it's seasoned.

Will one of these work? Or a paint scraper?

That looks too much like work! Let it season to see what shakes out. You could prob scalp it after it seasons with a hatchet.

What you want is an old school draw knife.

It's designed to quickly shave off bark and shape wood. It has a handles on both ends of the blade and is meant to be pulled toward you.

That lichen and bark won’t last long…
I burn dry wood that looks like that regularly…
