    For those that burn pecan

But do not live in an area of pecan trees/logs. Where do you source your’s? I have found much of my wood locally from friends with farms or tree sets. But Pecan just is not available locally, I buy from B&B with the knowledge I currently have no other sourcing knowledge, It is my go to smoke, but I need a better sourcing, thank you in advance,

I’ve been happy with the wood chunks, including pecan, I buy from fruitawood.

I have the same problem up here with Pecan not being a native tree.
Big box stores don't have it, even dedicated BBQ stores haven't had pecan in 2 years now and no idea if they will ever get any in.
Amazon shows it but try to order it and it comes up croppers or in the case of fruitawood.com the price of shipping along with duty and taxes makes it not worth ordering.
Happily sticking it out with cherry or maple for now.

OK this might be a stupid question, but is a tree that produces pecans a hickory?

See......you learn something new every day. I never knew they were in the same family. Cool info! Thanks. MBMorgan

MBMorgan I knew the smoke smells & tastes darn similar, but I too didn't know they were related. I was late from lunch that day in science class.

I did not know that, although I have burned hickory. There is something in my senses, that triggers the "that’s it button" on me that when I smoke with pecan or pecan with oak, that just triggers this smells right. It happened the very first time I smoked with pecan,

Is hickory available in your area?

I live in apple country…. Have orchard owning neighbors… But try to get wood…
It’s all under contract and is very limited in the first place…
Pecan wood hasn't been in my shed since the 100+ year old trees left around an old farm we hunted, would blow down…

I’ve had it shipped to me from Gourmet Woods, out of Texas. In the end, I found it much cheaper to source local wood, which consists of cherry, hickory and oak. Personally, I can’t tell the difference from one type of wood to another. On another note, I can’t tell the difference between kiln-dried wood vs. naturally seasoned.

We are surrounded by pecan trees. There are pecan orchards all over our area. I have 3 large pecan trees in my front yard. I use some of the limbs that fall off mine in my smoker. Pecan trees shed limbs often. I see the orchard owners piling them up to burn every fall. What diameter would work best for you.

I will get a measurement for you but somewhere in that baseball to softball is likely perfect.

Oak Smoke , smart move. I do the same with the Japanese maple in my yard, works great for me.

I live in an area with pecan trees, and in early 1990's lived in a house with a large mature pecan tree in the backyard. I used dead wood and sticks that fell to smoke with back then. These days though I get my pecan wood as chunks from Academy (B&B) or Lowe's and Home Depot (Cowboy or Weber).

I just love the smell of a pecan fire, did you enjoy it as well? Could not even imagine just having a resource to it, right in your yard!

Richard Chrz I loved that tree. Sadly, I checked that house out on Google Maps recently, and the satellite view indicates that the current owners cut down the tree. It was messy when it was dropping the pecans in their green husks in the fall, but worth the trouble. My 30 year old daughter swung in a swing hanging from a branch of that tree, so its sad to know its gone.

Most of my smoking there was in a crappy Brinkman water smoker, but I fed sticks to the fire through the side door.

I can't help, but our kitchen cabinets are pecan and absolutely lovely.

I like pecan and can easily find it in plastic bags at the hardware store. Not particularly cheap, but the smae price as the other woods there. I do prefer Pecan to most other woods.

I bought a box of maple chunks a couple years ago and really like that for certain things. I went to get more and they place no longer stocks it. Hence I am looking here for mail order sources for wood chunks. Looks like smokinglicious and fruitwoods seem like what many are using so I have to look over fruitwoods and compare.
