    Royally Disappointed

Pretty sure this will be my last bag of Royal Oak

Never used it and I'll keep it that way.

Locally I get B&B lump at Walmart or Academy of $14.96 for 20 pounds. Once in a while there will be a disappointing bag but not very often. I’ve been using lump for over 10 years. I haven’t used a brand yet that doesn’t let a bag with too much small stuff slip out once in a while.

Loving the Jealous Devil, and they have it at the Home Depot!

Very disappointing. Over the years I’ve had a few bags like that. I’ve also had bags where the lump crackled and pop a lot.

I never had a bag of lump that didn’t crackle and pop a lot.
It’s the biggest reason I switched to briqs

Finster same here. Kingsford blue bag is all I use. I’m happy with using only 1 fuel.

I find CharLogs to be a great addition and will give extended burn time. Never a prob w/these.

That is the real downside to Royal Oak. My last bag was pretty good. The upside for me is it seems to burn longer and with less ash than B&B, but I love B&B’s size distribution. I bought two bags a couple of weeks ago.

Treat it like salt. Weight determines salinity and BTU's.

Yep. I tried it a few years ago, and my bag was at least that bad. Once was enough.

Same here. Won’t buy it again.

Yeah, I stopped buying Royal Oak a long time ago due to the poor burn times, ash production, and poor sizes. Good riddance !

I tried RO a couple times and it basically sucked. Won't be trying again.

Looks good to me. I'd prefer all my lump to be golf ball-ish in size.

I get it, but I do love that exact mix to fill a chimney for starting and for short cooks. Lately I’ve been grilling more influenced by Argentinian style - longer and less hot - so this is perfect for me. Now, longer cooks I definitely want bigger chunks.

I tried it for the first time this year and wasn’t satisfied either. Won’t be using it again.

I buy Timber Lump Charcoal. American hardwood. Made in Missouri. Huge fan.

However, I just bought a bag of Meijer brand briquettes to start fires in the stick burner and use on the PK with a vortex. The briquettes look funny, light funny, and put off an excess of smoke. Won't be buying those again.

I’ve used it before, but not for a few years now. I didn’t have much of a problem with it, but think there are fuels I prefer that cost about the same, or even less when on sale.

In a kamado the burn rate is controlled by the air flow, so theoretically the lump size shouldn’t matter. I’ve found that as long as the lump is bigger than gravel, but smaller than softball, it all works about the same. Too big and there is a risk of the fire not spreading between lumps, too small and there is a risk of air flow clogging and the fire cratering. When I get those huge pieces of JD or FOGO I usually break them up with a hammer and chisel!

Yeah, never had any good luck with that stuff. Bottom of the barrel in the charcoal world.
