I like Kamado Joe big block, but it’s gotten too expensive. I use B&B lump or Rockwood now. Several of the premium lumps are $32.99 for 20 lbs at the local Ace hardware. I can get B&B there for $19.99 for 20 lbs and have no complaints.

B&B and Royal Oak have worked well for me in the past.

First time I heard of B&B (on this forum as I recall), I got two bags on sale at Ace Hardware. First bag I opened was AWESOME 😎 Big chunks, some too big for the Weber Charcoal basket! Very few 'crumbs' - I was in love 🥰 (well, not like I love my wife, but you get the picture ). Second bag was mostly crumbs, but I had already bought a third bag (cuz the first one was the BOMB 💣).
2nd and 3rd bags have very few big chunks and mostly crumbs
Thinking Jealous Devil might be next "try this" flavor ...

nunyaz that was my similar experience, too. After seeing the positive comments here, I bit. Plus I had a $5 coupon. It seemed like only about half the bag was respectable pieces. The rest being “crumbs”.

I’ve had good luck with B&B and Jealous Devil although the B&B is a little less expensive in my area.

FOGO and/or Jealous Devil for me.

I always sort of thought that some of the stories about plastic/rocks etc were far-fetched until I found myself in a situation where I needed to run out and just get a bag a couple summers ago (whatever Tractor Supply sells)...seriously had rocks and piece of what had clearly been a 2x4 in that bag.

Had a bunch of mixed experiences with several brands...then tried Jealous Devil and have used nothing else since.

Does anyone have a review of Blues Hog Lump? I’ve seen it and it’s pricey.

I’ve found that B&B lump works just as well for me as the more expensive “premium” brands in m kamado.

Since I do mostly hot and fast cooks, occasionally 5 or 6 hour ribs , I like lump charcoal that averages "fist size" pieces and even smaller! Never tried JD brand. How is it sized. I've tried BnB but at times had to break-up some softball size chunks just to fit them in my chimney.

RlsRls I’ve never tried JD but pics I’ve seen of it had really large chunks. The B&B I get has a few larger ones generally medium sized and smaller. The bigger ones work fine in my kamado, I just refuse to pay the ridiculous prices for the premium stuff. Just me.

B&B Charcoal, FOGO, Kamado Joe XL.

FOGO has always been the best for me. It is pricey though. I stick with B&B most of the time. reasonably priced, available easily and it burns really well for slow or hot and fast cooks like grilling or searing. Money aside, I would rip FOGO all the time. I love that stuff.

I'm all in using Jealous Devil and B&B but i'm in the minority when I say I didn't like FOGO at all. Used it two different times and found it threw a TON of sparks all the time and for a premium lump it was all small broken pieces.
On the other hand Jealous Devil and B&B have always been very consistent, and I get much less ash from these two brands.

I like Fogo just okay. Nice size lump, but sparkling badly and slow to light. I also had a temperature spike at the end of the cooks. (Anyone else?). My general favorite is the Kamado Joe, if I find a good price. Costco puts it on sale regularly although the shipping can break it up.

The nakedwiz site is THE resource for all things charcoal. Alos has lots of komado info, (including video and analysis of flashover)
