    Lump favorites?

I'm sure this has been beat to death already but I'm resurrecting it. I'm thinking lump will work best in the new SM. Thinking I will use it to start and build up the coal bed. What's your favorite? Cleanest burn, heat, long lasting, etc.

I have been happy with Jealous Devil.
    Go through about 2 bags/year

Going through 2 bags a year, since I have never used jealous devil, what kind of use is factored into 2 bags a year? Only certain cooks, shorter cooks? What timeframe for length of smokes?

Richard Chrz I think it's more a factor of the kamado efficiency than anything else. A full "load" of JD can get me 24+ hours unrefueled smoking. JD does seem to burn hotter and longer than others I have tried, but I have not tested it scientifically. FOGO seemed to spark more when lighting and did not last quite as long. I occasionally supplement with kingsford pro on sale, but for the amount I use, I feel JD is worth the price premium.

Thank you gboss, I'm pretty new to lump, I just picked up 4 20lb bags of BB Lump, but, wanting to get a few other bags for comparison this year. I see they sell a 35 lb bag on amazon. May have to grab it.

It won’t be much help to you in California, but I only use Publix Greenwise lump these days. Big pieces, lights fast, burns a long time and low ash.

B&B lump is very good. I like Masterbuilt lump because it is a few dollars cheaper per bag and I can’t tell the difference.

At first, I thought you were talking about lumpy oatmeal. I was going to say raisins.

I guess charcoal burners got to take their lumps too.

My fav is Lumpy. You know, from Leave It to Beaver. He was best buds with the beaver's older brother Wally.

I’ve had good luck with B&B, Jealous Devil and Royal Oak. But had my eye on Masterbuilt and will give it a go per STEbbq

Only for hot and fast right now but it’s not all I use for hot and fast. I bounce around and quite frankly really only buy lump when I find it on a good sale. I like it but not well enough to use it exclusively. Richard Chrz I have another 8 bags of Weber briquettes that I stocked up on when they were on clearance for low and slow. Once that is gone I may try lump for that.

Andrrr i used to love Weber charcoal, I just purchased 24 bags of BB oak briquettes, i've enjoyed that briquette as well. Lump is a summer project for me to spend more time with. If you get a chance sometime, try the BB oak briquettes.

I saw your post the other day about grabbing 24 bags, love it. Funny, awhile ago I was thinking I only had about 10 bags of Weber left and I’d better figure out what I was going to switch to once I ran out, lol. There’s quite a lot of chatter on here about B&B briqs so I bought a bag on sale just to try and I really liked them! So I know when my stockpile runs out I’ll more than like use that for LnS. I'm really liking the Jealous Devil. Avoid Cowboy like the plague. And, heck, sometimes the cheap Mexican mesquite lump is the right call, once you get all the plastic and rocks out of it.

I use Cowboy alot. Never had an issue. However I do mostly fast cooks. What's everyone's problem with it? Is it mostly on long cooks that it comes up short?

The bag of Cowboy I bought had carbonized window trim and what looked like hardwood floor boards carbonized. That was several years ago. I’m not going to cook with a recycled house. I have no way of knowing if there was paint or anything else on the wood. I’ll spend a few extra dollars to get stuff that is shaped like part of a tree.

My second bag of Cowboy smelled like kerosene or diesel. Had to throw cook and rest of charcoal away. Lucky that I was using my Acorn and not a Kamado ceramic. I don’t know if I could have ever gotten the smell out! I just can’t bring myself to try it again.

I know a lot of folks have not had good luck with Royal Oak, but it burns long and producers little ash. My only complaint is that I wish it had more large pieces. On the other hand B & B solves that problem, but doesn’t burn as long and produces more ash. I’ve used the less expensive Big Green Lump which is great if you need a lot of medium size pieces, but it doesn’t burn as long and produces more ash. I don’t think there is a perfect lump out there that shines in every category. The most important thing is if it satisfies a you.

I find B&B works well for me. In my kettle or my offset I will put a layer of unlit B&B on the bottom and put a lit chimney on top of it, seems to get a good long burn like that.
