Wait... you have people at checkout??? Like people who scan your groceries???? I thought that was a historical footnote these days, those people are extinct! WE actually work for THEM (WalMart)now - for FREE!
Stores around my way have a mix of self checkout and staffed checkout.
I avoid self checkout unless it is extremely inconvenient for me not to.
Self checkout saves them money, not the consumer, and it costs people jobs.
Granted, not the best job in the world, but a job nonetheless...
