The Meathead Method - Double Myth Buster!

MYTH: Cooking with cast iron is healthy

MYTH: Cooking with cast iron is unhealthy

Health nuts say that some of the iron gets into the food and that is good for our hemoglobin. Others say that if you have hemochromatosis, a metabolic disease where your body can absorb too much iron, tiny amounts of iron can leach into food and make you sick.

BUSTED. Wellllll, in order for iron to leach out, it has to be in contact with the food. But if you have seasoned the pan properly, how, pray tell, does the metal
touch the food? And how much benefit out of the 80,000 meals you will eat in an 80-year lifespan are prepared in cast iron? Will these phantom benefits add one minute to your life?

A bowl of Cheerios contains more iron than a serving of tomato sauce heated in a cast-iron pan. Plus, the chemical form of the iron in Cheerios is more easily absorbed by the body. You want iron? Just eat some meat and vegetables.

My new book, The Meathead Method, is out May 13. The great Alton Brown said it is “The only book on outdoor cookery you’ll ever need.”

You can pre-order on Amazon at tinyurl.com/meatheadmethod.

If you buy a copy, take a selfie with the book when it arrives, post it on your favorite social media channels, send a link to [email protected] I’ll send you a link where you can download our new eBook on Heavenly Hamburgers.

Coffee has been both good and bad for ya a number of years according to the "experts".

And movie theaters had to stop using coconut oil 'cause it was bad. Now coconut oil can be found in the health food section...

If the store has a "Health Food" section what does that say about the rest of the food in the store??

You can say same thing about eggs… how many times have they gone back and forth over the years whether eggs are good for us or bad?

Yeah, but that is because some people still think they come out of a chicken's butt, then they are told chickens technically don't have a butt, then all hades break loose.

I was in Dillard's years ago buying a wedding gift for a friend when a random guy walked up and interrupted us in order to announce to the salesman that their glazed dinnerware was poisoning everyone with lead. Then he walked off. It happened so fast that neither of us had a chance to make a response.

Read the review for the MAK 2 Star. The following from Meathead is contained in that review "I use my MAK for testing most of my smoking recipes because it is so good at maintaining a temperature. I need this kind of consistency so I can tell readers how long it will take to cook a certain piece of meat at a precise temperature."

It probably depends on if the recipe is being smoked versus grilled or seared. Grilling and searing are not pellet smoker friendly, since most of them don't do well at those two functions, but any smoked or indirect cooked recipe should be.

Way Back When: Cast Iron’s Early Days
Our story starts around the 5th century BC, in the distant land of China. These ingenious folks figured out how to cast iron into functional forms. Rustic Roots: The History of Cast Iron Skillets

Will anyone die that uses cast iron skillets?
How many people have died that used cast iron skillets? Say from the 5th century BC on ward?
Here is the proof: everyone who uses cast iron skillets will die, sooner or later.

I think we are more likely to die from getting wacked in the head with the cast iron skillet, than eating from the same skillet...

I just got my confirmation email from Amazon. It's arriving tomorrow. Looking forward to learning so much more. Of course a deep dive review coming 🙁. Maybe an abridged version.
