Looking at the Primo XL -- my next cooker

    Hey folks.
As my BBQ adventures continue, I have thought a lot about what to add to my weber kettle and WSM lineup. I have gone back and forth on a lot of different ideas but settled on a Kamado for my next purchase. It looks to be a fun cooker with a lot of versatility, which I am a fan of.

I have gone back and forth looking at few but think I have settled on the Primo. I have/am looking at the Kamado Joe, Weber summit, SNS and the Primo. Big reason I like the Primo is it is Made in the USA, so huge bonus for me.

From my research, the Primo sounds like a solid grill. Stable temps, easy to manage.
I was curious for those who own one, is there anything you do not like, or wish it could do something another Kamado can?

They have a lot of accessories which is good. Seems to line up very closely with Kamado Joe.

I think it would be a good addition to my collection. Different, yet versatile and satisfying.

I appreciate the feedback and recommendations!

    Cheers!

Attjack has one. Not sure who else. But Primo is an excellent choice. I like the oblong shape for doing 2 zone cooking too.

Heya! Yes. The oblong shape would seem to provide a better two-zone cooking setup. I love doing two-zone setup as I feel it gives a lot of options for cooking. Great way to quickly pull of something from a hot zone, to the cool zone.
It is one of the Primo unique pieces that I also liked.

Had it for several years now, no complaints. Holds temps rock solid. I've got the rotisserie attachment which works well too. Go get it!

I have spent a long time researching kamados. The Primo XL was long my top pick before I ended up with Meathead’s BGE. I’d look for a used one as they are very durable and they can be cheap used. The other choice was really buying Akorns and replacing as needed as they can easily be found for $150-$200 and work extremely well.

Another cheap kamado you find a lot of on FB Marketplace are the Vision kamados sold at Home Depot. My son in law got a nice setup that was probably $800 new at HD, for $150, and it looked like it had been lit MAYBE once or twice at most. Hadn't even sooted up the interior as most of it was still white inside. Granted its only 18", but the price was right...

That will be my first choice as well if I ever pull the trigger on a Kamado-style grill. The oblong shape is what caught my attention first.

You can’t go wrong with a Primo. They’re excellent cookers. I have two Kamado Joes that I really like also. I have the Classic and a Big Joe. Both will do two zone cooking with no problem. I just don’t know anything negative about the Primo. I have not researched their warranty, the Kamado Joes are lifetime.

Too bad you and Thunder77 are on opposite coasts…

Up for sale is a Primo XL Jack Daniel’s edition with stainless steel cart, ash rake and high quality Prrimo cover. The grill is in excellent condition, barely used. Be aware that the grill weighs approximately 300 pounds. It can be taken apart to move. I can help load, but transport is up to you. Original cost over $2600 with

Not a kamado, but if was thinking about a kamado, I'd take a long look at this guy first. Seems really versatile, and allows access to the fire without removing food, grates, etc. Which means wood fire is viable.

The "El Patron" Grill & Smoker is the most versatile cooker we make.  "El Patron" is THE BOSS in Spanish and that's exactly what this grill is.  Inspired by the old school "hot box" style cookers.  You can grill, smoke, do direct heat, low and slow, indirect heat, bake, sear, rotisserie, and its even a pizza oven.

My first non gas cooker (2016) was the Primo XL. I still love it. I been seduced by the dark side here at the pit and have since bought a Pit Barrel, a KBQ, and a Weber Summit. It’s still my favorite of the lot. One thing that I love about it but you won’t need is the ability to hold temps in the snow. It’s truly a 12 month cooker. Also, once you learn temperature control it’s pretty much set it and forget it. I typically can hold temps after it’s locked in for at least 6 hours before any adjustments are required. It’s also incredibly versatile and yes the true two zone cooking is great. The Summit is also great and quite a bit cheaper. I don’t use that as much bc we have that at our river house - so mostly only in the summer. Feel free to ask me any questions.

The Primo is an excellent product. I have a Big Joe, so I would say that the notion that 2 zone is a unique feature of the Primo is mistaken. I do 2 zone in my Big Joe all the time. But the brands you mentioned are all very good. One thing I prefer about the big Joe is the depth of the cooker. On the top rack of the divide. and conquer system I can cook directly over coals without any worry about flare ups incinerating the food. In that way it kind of doubles as a vertical drum cooker.

Interesting. I never thought about the difference in depth. I am going to guess that with a greater depth, you can keep the food farther from the heat?

jasonwilliams14 Yes, exactly. And with the divide and conquer rack system, there are three levels for the grates. The grates are half circles, so you can have them at different levels if preferred. But at the top level, your food is a good distance away from the coals. One of my favorite things about the vertical drum cookers is the ability to produce smoke from the juices dripping down on the coals. It is better than wood smoke, IMHO. The depth of the Big Joe allows for this without scorching.

jasonwilliams14 All that said, you wouldn't be disappointed if you got the Primo or the Big Joe. They are both wonderful products.

Good capacity and better 2-zone performance than most other kamados make the Primo XL a good choice if you're looking for a kamado. I'm unsure if it's out yet but there is a new XXL Primo.

Our XX-Large Charcoal Primo provides the largest cooking area and the patented oval shape offers superior cooking efficiency and accessibility. Serve food to an entire party, prepare large meals for the family, or have the space to grill nearly anything just for yourself.

It sure is a great cooker. And oval beats round any day of the week. The one thing I would look into before pulling the trigger is customer support. They have a bad rep in Europe, so people shy away from the Primo. Kamado Joe is the dominant brand here (for a good reason). Either way, let us know when you buy one, we want photos!
