    Adding Wood To Kamado?

How does one gracefully add wood during the middle of a cook? I have a Primo XL and when it is fully loaded with ribs (or whatever), how do I add wood for more smoke? I guess I have to take off the ribs, grates, plates, etc? Any tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated!

For my KJ, yeah, it’s difficult. I have to remove it all then put it all back. So, I don’t add wood after I put the heat deflectors on.

        And better flavor!!

I don't add either, figuring most of the smoke will be sticking during the first hour or so, with a colder and maybe moister meat surface. That said, I'm getting really tempted to get/make a smoke pot as customtrim recommends.

If you want to get to anything, there is no way. You have to take it all apart. However, like others have said, I go for the Smoke Pot. Then you never have to worry about it. Check it out here. And it will be perfect for that Primo.

Cannot stress how glorious a smoke pot is in your Kamado, I’ve posted several time it is a flavor game changer.

Yuuuuuup! it is amazing. I just set mine in the fire!

Great interview BTW. It made me Google your location. Pretty gorgeous country out there, my friend.

I do have a smoke pot too. I really like it. For my KJ classic, I just have to consider the height of the charcoal bed plus the smoke pot bumping into my heat deflectors. Still works though.

            There is nothing better, IMHO.

customtrim yeah, I got one too big, but it still works well. And it means I can just load more wood into it!

Nice new gasket there too!! If you try out the smoke pot, let us know. We would love to hear what you think. I bet it will be awesome in that Primo.

The smoke pot was invented by a Dr. over on the Kamodo Kamado Forum. @Ceramic Chef brought it over to us here.Komoado Kamados are oval shaped as well, so it should be perfect for your rig.

I like the smoke pot idea a lot. I have a vision grill and have large lump hardwood that I put on top of the charcoal in generous amounts. For a long cook at 240 (my grill's low and slow spot), the wood smolders and smokes as long as the charcoal.

Spinaker - it has been a crazy few months. I had to help one buddy from long ago who was facing potential homelessness, then another buddy's dad became really ill and finally I had to spend time dealing with my dog. I'm back now!

Cant say about the oval Primos, but on the round kamados you can get a rig that can lift the whole thing out, put the wood in, and then replace the whole thing.

Check here for what is available for the Primos.

You don't. I mean, you can, but it's a pain in the ass. I have the same rig. I load up the charcoal with about 5 or 6 chunks of wood for long cooks. I'll have smoke for the whole cook. One of these days i'll get off my ass and make a smoke pot. Sounds like the thing to do.
