What a great thread, am curious if y’all have tried a kick ash charcoal basket in the PK. Polarbear made a good point about the hinges on the grate. Either way, love the detail and information, thanks for posting.

Made my own custom charcoal basket. If there is a kick ash one that fits, I’d consider trying it.

Also the hinged grate can be removed and I routinely run low and slow without that grate on so I can pile extra coal on top. So you may not need to worry about the hinges.

This is the one I saw on kich ash's website. I'm basing off the schematic on PK's website, so I don't really know. Your homemade basket is pretty nice too....

Looks like it could fit. The pk360 corners are rounded heavily so may not be able to get it all the way to the side. Probably close enough.

Distance vertically between the grates is 4” so that’s why I don’t like their basket. Too shallow to really stack up the fuel.

The KA one looks like it could be a winner

The handles are over 4 inches high so that could be a problem. It might fit running length wise but then it will take up 1/2 of the grill space. Also you'll have dead space due to rounded corners and only using 10.5" of the space (I think you have just over 14" to work with).

They have an oval one, do you have those measurements? It's not listed on their site.

Here is a set of Weber baskets I bought for $14 - not too bad. In my last cook I needed 350 degrees, and I used 1 basket filled with used coal. Half way through the cook I was worried it was gonna hold up so I dropped in the 2nd basket with new briq's. I might take these apart & modify for better fit around the corners.

Not even sure its necessary, in one of PK's videos the dude takes a full hot chimney of lump and tossed it in willy-nilly. I contacted PK and said "Hey man what gives? I thought coals aren't supposed to touch the aluminum?" They said they like to error on the side of caution, but have never had one returned burnt.

There is no damage in mine running L&S with no basket & coals resting up the sides. I got the Weber baskets for hotter temp cooks or searing.

That looks like it would work just fine. Great idea!

New to AmazingRibs. Does anybody use the charcoal grate as an additional smoke cook surface?

I have but there’s a significnat temperature difference or 30-60F so you have to compensate for that and/or rotate food levels while cooking.

I use the PK charcoal basket for my M1 smoker/grill. I fill er up to over flowing and place it on the far right hand side for indirect method. It works great and helps to keep the ashes from falling down into the cooker so as to aid in the cleanup process. Not really on topic but thought some might find it helpful.
I really love the looks of the PK360 and it holds sentimental value since my dad had a PK when I was growing up back in the seventies.
