I think the SnS concept has potentially wider application than even Weber kettle + PK Grill. Imagine an integrated SnS and grill grate as a drop in alternative to the PBC grill grate. I'd buy one ...

It would need to be a one-piece unit ... A combo SnS and 17.5 inch grill grate. The SnS would be used instead of th PBC coal basket when doing a SnS-style cook. Might also need a Weber-like vented lid if the PBC rebar holes can't provide proper airflow. Possibly might also plug the holes on the SnS side of the PBC to direct hot air flow over the grill grate side ... basically converting a PBC into a temporary kettle-like SnS cooker ...

In theory, you coul also just build an SnS that might hang from the PBC grate ... if the stock grate could withstand the heat.

Honestly I think folks would be better off just owning a PBC and a Kettle/SnS. That's an awesome combo and relatively cheap in the BBQ world.

Honestly I agree with you ... just can't break a decades old habit of leaving no stone unturned when thinking of possible new market segments.

I hear ya, and I appreciate the suggestions. No idea is a bad idea. Every idea is a step towards THE idea that's a real hit. That's how the Slow 'N Sear got started, actually.

I'd like to own a PK some day. Those things look like they are a very practical grill/smoker combo. Its also that everybody and their Mom has a weber kettle.
Okay, not really but they dominate the market no question. The PK is unique and not many folks have them. (I've never actually seen one in person) Forgive me, but, isn't the PK kinda already a SNS/kettle combo? Coals stacked on one side with an indirect cooking side. Throw a small water pan next to the coals and your kinda rolling SNS style. However, I was thinking, what if you made a stainless water insert to go in the PK? You wouldn't necessarily need the coal portion of the SNS that the current version has. Plus it would be small, and easy to drop in and It would help you stack the coals on the fuel side too, so you could concentrate the heat for the sear portion of your cooks. I don't know I am just kind of thinking out load here.......

The short answer is yes....but that's just like using bricks or a water pan in a kettle without an SnS....it will work but not as well as the SnS (theoretically for the PK, proven for the kettle). We thought of just a water insert in the kettle too, but the SnS's concave basket does two things- it groups the coals together tighter than a loose pile of coals, and it forms a thermal barrier between the coals and the outside of the grill wall so coals aren't laying directly on the grill wall. This vastly improves the efficiency of the coals, and in turn of the grill itself.

I've been thinking on this. I love the PK but like my man Spin I have never seen one. I just dont think theres that many of them around. They stop production on them sometime in the 70's. Production started again in 2000 ish time frame. The company has only began to make a push into the market in the last two years. Feel free to correct me on this. I could be wrong on my facts.

What is their market share? How many are out there? Does a owners group exist for them someplace?

I dont know what I'm getting at here. Just seems like a long ride on the cost curve to do an SnS for what may be such a low volume unit.

Soooo, this SnS would not just fit in the PK. It would fit in many charcoal grills, the PK being one of them. I've even thought about making SnS modular "blocks" that can be put together for a small SnS or huge SnS depending on how many you use.
