I've only used the kit once, but it will get a lot of use at a camp site. Might even do a DIY hibachi night at the house... Anyway the base is the only part of my PKGO I'm not happy with. To be fair I did leave it outside a few months, but the grates are all rust free.
Sanded it down and painted some dog hair and bugs into the finish :P It might also beneft from a drain hole or 3 in each recess I suppose. Once it dries it will live in the garage where I shoulda kept it anyway.
If not cooking outdoors, I am cooking on the stovetop with my 14" carbon steel wok, 12" CI skillet, or in the oven with my two Lodge CI pizza pans, or two dutch ovens. I've also got a nifty Lodge carbon steel grill pan that rocks for veggies outdoors.
I'm not sure it's steel, but I wish it was powder coated. If I used it in an RV or something I would strongly consider having it media blasted and powdercoated.
I received one for Christmas. Used it to sear off some SV chicken and pork chops so far. Very nice size for that type of stuff. My only issue is one of the lower vents doesn't fully close with the little snap from the spring. It must close enough because when I shut down the fire was extinguished and no more charcoal burned off.
Glory, I had the same issue with mine. PK sent me a replacement vent door, but it had the same problem. If you look inside the door there will be about a quarter inch circular area of metal sticking up from the surface, which is residue from the mold used to cast that aluminum piece, and it’s preventing the door from completely closing. The screw holding the door on can be easily removed, and I used a Dremel to gently grind down the residual, problem solved. A small file should work as well.
