Anybody have any experience with this Kingsford Lone Star grill... or similar? (See Owner's Manual here.) It caught my attention at Home Depot the other day because it was cheap ($129 on sale for $99 right now), it has a pretty decent grill size, adjustable charcoal height (great for switching between slow cooking and searing without having to split your cooking surface or rearrange your setup mid-cook), charcoal access door, separate ash catcher tray, etc. If I can set up a Weber kettle for smoking I bet I could smoke in this thing as well. Possible downsides: the steel could be heavier, there's an air gap between the lid and the body when the lid is closed.
I would be looking at this primarily as a grill, and secondarily as a smoker if I could figure out a good setup. Thoughts?
Yup, I happen to have one, an have nuthin but good things to say bout em.
I hadda look back in my photo archives, to see jus when did I git this cooker...earliest pic is 27JUN13...
My neighbours gifted it to me, when they bought a fancier cooker! (Thanks, Bill an Nicky!) So, it was already outdoors several years, before I got it...
It 'stood' kinda all akimbo, like a newborn colt standin up, first time... Replaced th missin 6mm bolts with some my Son scavenged fer me, offa an older Toyota he was scrappin out, an all's been right as rain, since.
Mine ain't rusted out, yet, despite sittin outside fer 5 years, 9 months, 26 days (2125 days, 51,000 hours) in th Kansas Territory weather, which can range from -40° to 121°, F.
Lotsa great cooks an smokes on it in that time, butts, yardbird, smaller briskets, chuckies, tons of burgers, dogs, brats, chix breasts, steaks, roasts, pork loins, sides, an lotsa other miscellany...
Th 4 vents add a great degree of control, an versatility to it, as does th adjustable charcoal rack. Th removable ash pan is also a very convenient feature, an makes cleanup, or setup super easy.
Very nicely done, "Kingsford"!!!
It is truly a joy to cook on, an so dang easy, even I can do it!
I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one, at that price point; it's gotta be one of th very best bang for th buck cookers I've ever run across! (An it's still out front, after all those years... )
If ya have any other questions, or particulars ya might wanna know bout, gimme a holler, okay, Amigo?
Cracked me up, I hit the link and it showed the grill. Underneath the grill it showed a HD “people who bought this also bought Kingsford Lighter Fluid & Royal Oak briquettes. Some marketing maestro’s idea.
I've used it several times when visiting friends. I gotta say I like it. There's the adjustable charcoal rack, several vents et.c. Compared to other grills in this price range I think it holds its own. As for rusting? I have no input, as I don't own one.
