anyone have experience using a M1 grill?

I am ever looking for the next piece of equipment. Lately thinking I want a cooker with more capacity than my BGE lg , and weber performer. Plus we have a Napoleon prestige pro gasser. So was looking into M1 but concerned about learning curve
and fuel usage. I don't mind tending a fire, but I would rather not have to add fuel every 30 min . So any feedback appreciated.
On the plus side, looks well built, capacity and I know using wood or lump etc will taste great.

M1's are like heavy duty Hasty Bake's right? I have a Hasty Bake, and it's a rib cooking machine, probably one of the better charcoal cookers you can buy. I think M1's have some more bells and whistles and a little bit different internals that make them more heavy duty.

I've run though thousands of dollars of grills and smokers and I sometimes I wish I could just go back to the basics with a weber gasser and kettle.

Edit: Jon, for my Hasty Bake, I don't have to do much fire management, I don't do brisket cooks on it. I usually do chicken and ribs, then for grilling, steaks and all that.

99% of my smoking is on a pellet grill.

when you run the hasty bake do you have to do a lot of fire management? I'm kinda use to the BGE load with fuel once for even a 20 hour cook, even weber ketel with sns last hours. so concerned about the amount of attention that may be required.

For the most part you are right. The hasty bakes are 18ga steel mostly while the M1 are 10ga. They have a few extra features too, but the metal is the biggest difference.

I have an M1, I just haven’t been using it much due to the rainy season. What do you want to know?

Jon Liebers like the post below I too had great results using as a stick burner. It maintained and reached 225-240 degrees with very little effort and I just added a small log every 30 minutes or so. Using it as a charcoal cooker is great too since it cooks a lot like a Santa Maria style grill except you have a lid that can close and the fire is raised or lowered instead of the grill.

Just received my M1 grill a couple weeks ago. Have cooked a brisket with it. Did not find fuel management a problem. Used 1 small log every hour to hour and a half. Temp was easy to control---ranged between 225 and 265 degrees over the period of smoking. No smoke leaking around the hood which was always a problem with the 2 Hasty-Bake cookers I have owned in the past and the Pitts and Spitts pit I previously owned. Easy to clean up afterwards. My experience with the M1 is limited but I am very excited about the versatility of the cooker.
