    Park-Stye Grill

Has anyone been tempted or purchased a park style grill? They don't seem too expensive and you can adjust the grates. I'm not sure if the ones online are the same quality as what is found in most parks? About 10 year ago I went to a local park with my wife and her family. I cooked chicken, veggies, and tortillas on a double park-style grill. It was like grill chicken fajitas. I had a blast cooking on the open grills, they are a little higher than your typical Weber. Of course I was prepared with a charcoal starter, charcoal container, welding gloves... At one point I noticed I was getting a lot of looks. I was thinking it was because of my grilling game. Then I noticed I was the only white guy in the park. My wife and family are from Mexico.

Anyhow if you have one, or been tempted, I like to hear your thoughts. I don't get on the site much because I have two four year old's and a three you old. Hence why I'm posting at 3am.

I have never considered getting one of these, but that's just because I hadn't considered it a possibility. I have always enjoyed grilling on these things at the parks. And there's something appealing about it just sitting out in the open, ready to be used. And it wouldn't have to go on my patio. I could put it out somewhere else in my yard. Thanks for bringing this up.

Right. And you can buy a base or cement it in the ground.

I have thought about it for sure. Got a spot for one, but not in the immediate plans.

I like those grills. As with most grills where you can adjust the grates up and down: I don’t really use it. A much better way (in my opinion) is to build/use a wider grill. Think Parrilla, where you can adjust heat by moving food sideways. The assumption is of course that you build your glowing embers more on one side of the grill of course.

So, if I were you, I’d try and find the same reasonably priced model but in a wider version, or get one where two grills are side by side. Either way, fun idea and fun grill! Of course you should get one 👌

I haven't owned a grill with adjustable grates but it makes sense one may not adjust the grates often. I could see setting a few zones and being done with it. I have cooked on Weber grills since the 80s and it's nice having a rectangle shape for a change. I was thinking maybe an Assassin 48 next. That should provide the width you mentioned. The Lone Star Grillz 48 would be nice but I can't justify the cost.

The place we rent in the Keys has one, it works fine. Nice you can swivel them 360 degrees to adjust for the wind. There is a bit of spacing between the bars so you have to think about what you are grilling or get a wire rack insert.

I found out about the spacing issue, luckily I had some foil with me. But your right one would need a wire rack or a grate from a gas grill.

My wife is Chicana. Many family get togethers have featured carne asada cooked on one of those grills.

This would be a great prize in the monthly give away.

Agreed! But then I would never win anyway.

That triple grill is a real head-turner.

We rented a place in Hilton Head once, this is what they had and we used it with good results while we were there, we bought a disposable grill grate to use top.

Good call with the disposable grill grate. With all the burnt-on mystery residue and bird poop, some exotic flavors could have been grilled in to your meat otherwise.

We were not sure what grilling equipment they had when we book the place, we had to buy charcoal, starters, brush and disposable grate and it worked out fine. We were the only ones cooking in pool area.

MCS strikes in many ways, so my answer is yes I have been tempted. But, it has probably been more like I would like to cook on one of those. Of course, I could go to a park and do so, but it is a hassle and there usually will be some clean up from the previous user. If you get one keep in mind that the decision as to where to locate it is somewhat final, and you probably will want to find a way to keep it covered. Keep grilling.

I’d love to have one if my deck was a patio. But I’d have to go up and down a dozen steps, so it’s out of the question. My BiL and I turned out some amazing tri tips on one when we were vacationing in Hawaii, though. We rented a condo with one right outside the door, on the patio.

They'll be outlawed in public parks soon and a thing of the past. At least in some states... I'll bet you a lot of places have already gotten rid of them.

Any state that has the power to outlaw outdoor cooking isn't some place I would want to live.

Yes, I see that happening in some states - removing the park stationary grill, especially in So Cal. I’ll need to check the park down the street to see if they have done that. Fire pits have been removed along the beaches in So. Cal. But you can always take your own grill to the park. That will be very hard to enforce.

How about a Santa Maria attachment for your Kettle? Much cheaper and some come with a rotisserie.

Bingo! That’s what I was thinking. Got a SM attachment for my PK360 just so I could lower or raise the grill grate.

Yes! We had one of these for years. Installed it near our fire pit for ease of access. Very durable and although just chicken pictured, we cooked tons on this grill.
I had to take it down last summer as it finally rusted through the bottom.
if you buy one new, clean the ash out and cover when not in use (like any other outdoor grill) and it will lasts years.
Ours was a rescue when the Town was replacing them and were throwing them away. It was at the park for 15-20 years per the staff and we got about 8-10 more out of it.

Only negative: pick a spot where you want it and really think about the location. Relocation requires good amount of effort.

Excellent find. I was just going to mention searching nearby parks for real bargains when they do replacements. A few years ago a local State park did a full park replacement and the maintenance supervisor was selling them for $20 each. Got one for my son who is still using it a decade later

Thanks for the pics and comment! Yes, I'll ping the surrounding cities and see if I can get some intel on grills being replaced.
