Theoretically, you could make a BGE into an offset?

I have this BGE shell that I couldn’t give away. (I’m probably going to put it in the back corner of the yard and fill it with dirt and flowers, but inertia has kept me from doing it for the past two years. It will probably get done in a burst of activity, some day.)

But look at it. I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t make a firebox and a pipe to the lower vent, put the top on (I have the hinge), and hang racks of ribs from the upper vent. Sort of a hybrid offset/PBC!

To be clear, I’m never going to do this. But there isn’t any thermodynamic reason it wouldn’t work, I don’t think. Heat + meat = dinner.

Why not? Only I think the space where the bottom vent is might have to be cut out just a bit. I think it could be kind of awesome since you have all that thermal mass in the egg.

Edited to add that I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Like my good friend, Dave, I have no idea what I'm talking about either. But that doesn't keep me from commenting. I say go for it! It's too bad we're not neighbors or I'd be over there right now helping you plan. B

Like Dave and Brian, I don’t know what I’m talking about, but I see no reason that wouldn’t work. If you were a little closer, I’d be happy to come over and contribute the nothing I know about building a smoker.

Put the fire further away and run the smoke through a metal dryer duct and use the BGE as a cold smoker in cooler weather.

I’m thinking of doing that with my regular BGE, and smoking some cheese, some almonds, etc.

Darn, Tom. I been holding on to a bottom for which I wanted to figure a way to use it as a cooker rather than turn it into a flowerpot. I thought you were going to lead the way. Then I would start looking for a top.

I’m waiting on a top and I’ll have a red version of your smoker. I’ve been intending to try the lid off my Weber kettle to see if it will work.

Lynn, I think a 22’ kettle lid might work or the “18 Kamado. Now ther is the firebox issue

Sunny, I have a fire box. My SIL had one crack on his KJ. They replaced it with a segmented one. He gave me the cracked one to go with the base I already had.

I think it would work - you may need to remove the bottom metal sliding vent to get the intake large enough.

        Make it into a planter.

That's what my wife would do.
