    Best Homemade Eggnog

I just learned to make this from a great bartender. It is outstanding. So much better than that cloying, overly sweet, store bought crud. Plus it's boozy, perfect for New Year's Eve.

    Ingredients for one Eggnog cocktail

    1 egg
2 oz bourbon (mid-shelf, don't overdo it with something really high end)
1 oz Luxardo liqueur (the actual liqueur not the syrup from Luxardo cherries)
1/2 oz maple syrup (real stuff, not the imitation crud for kid's pancakes)
Nutmeg or cinnamon (to sprinkle on top)

    Method

Fill with ice - a small wine glass or an old fashioned glass (or even a cocktail glass)
Add all ingredients except nutmeg/cinnamon to a cocktail shaker that is half full of ice
Shake for about 15 seconds until all ingredients are combined, cold, and a bit frothy
    Remove ice from your glass
    Strain eggnog into the glass
Garnish top with nutmeg or cinnamon

for an extra bit of holiday fun, toast a cinnamon stick lightly using a food torch and put the cinnamon stick in the finished cocktail.

Edit: got jonesing for one tonight, made one, here’s a pic. Still good!

My wife's family recipe is so rich that it will send most normal people into cardiac arrest, so we stopped making it and now just use a pitiful store bought egg nogg...

My grandfather made it every year. It sat in a large crock behind his chair from like 4 th of July until Christmas Eve. I think every month or so he would maybe stir it? I don’t remember it well. I was too young to get a full cup and honestly couldn’t have finished it if I had! I always had so much fun watching him and Gramma, My Mom and Dad and my Aunts and Uncles getting pretty happy! They would move all the furniture and sing and dance….

I’m going to try this later today. Since it’s for just one cocktail, if I don’t like it, quel dommage. Thanks for posting!

I make Alton Brown’s Aged Eggnog each year around Halloween and let it mellow until Christmas Eve (or at least we try to wait until Christmas Eve). I usually make a triple batch and give it out to neighbors and friends as gifts (along with my wife’s Chex Mix and beef jerky). It’s pretty potent, a triple batch uses an entire bottle each of bourbon, rum, and cognac. Blows the store-bought stuff right out of the water

A winter holiday classic eggnog recipe, Alton Brown's aged eggnog blends rum, bourbon, and cognac with dairy and nutmeg for a complex Christmas cocktail.

I made it according to the recipe you posted, took and sip and immediately liked it. I took it to my wife and she liked it but said it was kind of sweet. She added a bit of heavy cream and I tasted that. Wow!

I really dig the single-serve portion.

        Thanks for sharing this Eric!

I also immediately liked it. But I can see where a bit of heavy cream would be good, too. Will try that to see which way I like it better.

Yeah, the one drink way of making it is pretty cool. Easy to do, tastes great, very festive.

I added 1 oz of heavy cream to mine and thought it was spot on, although I’m not an eggnog connoisseur.

I made coquito last year, not the same but similar idea. It was delicious. But it cost so much to buy everything that I didn’t do it again.

Here in NEPA and the southern tier of NY there are quite a few dairies that make their own egg nog, that you can buy in local groceries. Purity Dairy is well known in the area, as is Sunset Ridge Creamery and Pecora Dairy.

The thing I like about this eggnog is that I have everything on hand, except Luxardo. And that isn’t particularly expensive. Plus I’m sure it will come in handy for other stuff.

I went to the liquor store and got the last bottle of Luxardo today. I’m on board with just about anything made in Italy. 😎
