    Koop's BBQ Kitchen, Galveston TX

Hey folks, I posted in this section yesterday looking for good recommendations for BBQ in Galveston. I just got back from having a huge lunch at Koop's BBQ Kitchen at Broadway/Ave J and 45th St. It was absolutely fantastic, some of the best BBQ I've ever had. It's run by a husband and wife team, and Mr. Koop took my order. I told him I was a home meat smokin' guy and that I belonged to this here forum, and he confidently replied, "Challenge accepted!" with a wink.

Asked him for what he'd recommend for a first timer, and he suggested the two meat plate with brisket and pork ribs, so that's what I did. He asked if I wanted the brisket fatty or lean, a nice touch, and I went for the point.

I was the first one in the door at opening time, 11am, breaking away from the conference I'm here for. By the time I sat down, there was a sizable line - a very good sign.

Within a few minutes, the young man handling tables delivered my tray. Paired the meal with a Dublin Texas Root Beer, made with cane sugar. For sides, I went with mac & cheese and their "brisket beans".

Very nice touch delivering the point slices and some burnt ends. And OMFG, the brisket!!!

Absolutely melt-in-mouth tender, fantastic bark, explosively juicy. I forgot to ask what kind of wood they cook with.

Pork ribs were also awesome, and had been sauced lightly with a thin, penetrative sauce that was both a touch sweet and tangy with some zip.

The ribs were tug-off-the-bone, not fall-off, as is right and proper. My one quibble was that the ribs could have cooked just a wee bit longer, the tug was just a trifle stronger than perfect IMO. Very much a nitpick.

The mac and cheese was good, but the brisket beans were spectacular. Not sure what kind of beans they were, but I'm assuming pintos. They had chunks of brisket in there, but also finely diced/chopped onion, green onion, and jalapeno for a very nice kick. A big bowl of just those would have been a fine meal.

I gave it all I had, but could not quite finish. Left a bit of meat on the second rib bone and couldn't eat the third slice of brisket, and only about half of each of the sides. I'm totally stuffed! I'll be sure to return here any time I'm in town, that's for sure. If you're ever in Galveston, you gotta check it out.

But, apparently, it didn't send your tastebuds into a frenzy!

Not exactly a symphony of flavors either, more like a chamber ensemble

Meh, place is good but I wouldn't call it world class. Glad you enjoyed it though. Should have taken a drive into Houston, could have had some real 'cue.

Yeah, but I didn't have close to enough time to go that far what with the other stuff I had to get done today. I was done and back to work (skipped the afternoon's conference stuff, too much to do) before noon...

Nice writeup and pics Dave! That cue looks darn good if ya ask me. The beans definitely look like pintos, and that’s the kind most of the Texas BBQ joints serve. I’ve had some excellent brisket beans in several places…and you’re right, you can make a meal out of em if you wanted to. Glad you came all this way and got to experience some great Q. Just curious, what were the prices there like?

ComfortablyNumb My lovely bride is holding down the fort at home while I do this work trip. We'll be traveling to Austin for the eclipse in April though, and we'll both get a shot at some classic Q while we're there for that...

Panhead John Thanks for the ping, I forgot to include the price. The 2 meat plate is about $21, plus a couple of bucks for the root beer. Under $25 all in.

They also will add a beef rib to any plate for an additional $5.37. I was *sorely* tempted to do that, but sanity prevailed, knowing I'd struggle to finish without it...

That sounds extremely reasonable for the quality of food.

Here's their standard menu. Their sides fluctuate day to day. I believe there were at least 8 sides to choose from today...

That does look great Dave. Thank you for sharing.

I would have definitely grabbed the sausage and probably the brisket elote. I am a sucker for any homemade sausage if on offer at a BBQ place.

I told the guy right up front, I want to balance trying as many things as possible against being able to actually finish it all...! Figured I'd just go with the proprietor's recommendation. If I could go again, I'd get sausage and a beef rib.

They make several excellent flavors of soda. Not long ago it was the home of the famous Dublin Dr, Pepper. People from all over came to get those. Eventually Dr.Pepper pulled the rug out from under them and the Dublin Dr Pepper went away.

Well how about that! Dr. Pepper was my Dad's favorite (he was raised in Dallas in the 1920s & 30s). We kids would see them in the fridge and yearn for one, because they were the forbidden fruit, only for Dad. Every once in awhile he'd let us have one. But woe betide if someone took one without permission, especially if it was the last one...!!
