Big Burger Smackdown Pt. 2! Five Guys vs Cheddars vs…..Buffalo Wild Wings?! 😳

For Part 2 of this spellbinding series I decided to try a few places that might not be the first place that comes to mind for burgers. My favorite was probably the last place you’d think to go for a hamburger. In the last 3 weeks I’ve now eaten hamburgers at 6 different places. Don’t wanna see another burger for at least a month! Anyway, here’s where I went this time around and what I thought…

    CHEDDARS SCRATCH KITCHEN

At Cheddars I ordered their bacon cheeseburger…a 1/2 lb. burger served with 4 slices of bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles and onion. It comes with fries, no extra charge. While the burger was fairly good, it was a little dry, hardly any juices at all. Tasted like it was made with a 90/10 pattie. It was made better by the addition of 4!! bacon slices. The burger was not only served lukewarm, but the cheese slice wasn’t melted onto the pattie while cooking, it was just thrown on cold at the end…major faux pas to me! The veggies were good and cold, tasted pretty fresh to me. The fries were also served lukewarm 😡 While they were decent tasting fries, they would have been much better served hot. I like mayonnaise on my burgers and they gave me some on the side. Get this, the mayo was the star of this show, no kidding! Whatever mayo this was, it was better than any I’ve tasted before, blows Dukes away for flavor. I actually went up to a staff member and asked what kind it was….they didn’t know. I’m sure it was probably something delivered by Cisco in giant containers, go figure. 🤷‍♂️
Burger with fries and a soft drink and tax was $15.35….before tip.

    FIVE GUYS BURGERS

I had lunch today at Five Guys, it was only the second time I’d ever eaten there…now I remember why, I’ll explain. I arrived at 11:15 this morning, I was the only customer there. For comparisons sake, there’s a Vietnamese restaurant right next door and it was packed, about 3/4 full, and it was a pretty good sized place. Right before I left at 11:35, one guy by himself came in. We were the only 2 customers in the place. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with grilled mushrooms and onions on it. Here’s one thing they do that pisses me off, their smallest order of fries is $5.09! For a single diner this is ridiculous! Who wants to pay $5.00 for frickin’ French fries?! They give you enough that’ll easily feed 2, maybe 3 people. The cup they came in was packed full and there was an equal amount scattered in the bottom of the bag. What about smaller and cheaper portions for folks dining by themselves? I took my leftover fries home and counted them before I threw them out, seriously. After eating all the fries in the cup, which was plenty for me, there was 40…FORTY….leftover fries that just went in the garbage. What a waste.

Here’s another thing that a lot of us can’t stand. When paying at the counter, they have the dreaded TIP AMOUNT that you have to enter, something anyway, before proceeding to pay. While there is the Zero tip option, I tipped 10% just so they wouldn’t spit on my food or somethin’. I hate tipping at a fast food joint just for taking my order! And….they didn’t even bring my food to me, I had to go get it myself.😡 Rant over. While I did enjoy my burger, it was pretty good, I’ve had just as good a burger at Jack In The Box….seriously! The fries were excellent. They had an option for a Cajun seasoning on them, which I ordered. This was the only place out of the six I’ve been to that charges extra for fries, not a big deal, but I damn sure don’t wanna pay $5.09 for them! Five Guys was the least “bang for your buck” place that I went to.
BURGER with fries and a soft drink and tax was $22.45…before a $2.25 tip, making it almost $25.00!!

    Look at this onion ring!
Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_4470.jpg Views:	0 Size:	2.18 MB ID:	1705863

Saving the best for last. While Five Guys was the least bang for your buck, lemme tell ya, Buffalo Wild Wings was just the opposite! Here’s the deal. First off, I ordered their Bacon Smashed Hatch Chili Burger, which came with fries but I opted for onion rings instead, $2.00 extra. The burger came on a Challah bun with well proportioned toppings and a juicy 1/2 lb pattie, American cheese, hatch chilies, pickled hot peppers and Hatch chili aioli. This was probably my favorite burger of the 6 places I’ve been. Just plain juicy and full of flavor! And damn, those onion rings! I don’t eat a lot of onion rings, mainly because I don’t eat out that much and when I do, they’re usually not on the menu. My lone attempt to make them at home, nothing to brag about, trust me. These were the best onion rings I remember ever eating. The batter was just right, a light, almost tempura style which I really like….. and there was actually thick and big onion slices inside. The tasty burger and onion rings made this lunch my favorite of the 6 places I visited. Buffalo Wild Wings?!? Who’d a thunk it? Now, get this, on Mondays and Wednesdays they have a Buy One Get One Free on their burgers! Buy a burger with the included fries, get the same free! Helluva deal! I took my free order home for another meal the next day.
Burger with onion rings [$2.00 extra] and tax came to $18.93 before tip. I didn’t order a drink, just had water.

    Here’s my grades for the 3 places….

    CHEDDARS: Burger B Fries C+ [a B if they’d have been hot] Their mayonnaise A+ 🥸

FIVE GUYS: Burger A- Fries A

BUFFALO WILD WINGS: Burger A Onion rings A+

So the 5 Guys really stands for "5 For the Fries."

Thanks for keeping me out of 5 Guys 4-Ever.

Gonna have to check out Buffalo Wild Wings.

    Thanks again, Great Job!!

Never impressed by Five Guys. But we did like the fries, which I guess have soared in price.

Unmelted cheese on burgers should be a crime.

BWW the winner? I'm surprised. They opened one near us some years ago and we checked it out. Neither of us thought it was worth going back. I'm glad you had a better experience.

Their locations are HIGHLY dependent on management. Our closet BWW has gone down the toilet, so we drive 15 minutes further now. Generally I like their wings and we get fried pickles or the cheese curds (wife eats them with caramel sauce). I've never ate anything other than wings there.

Wow, about $25.00 burger, drink fries and tip. For comparison, I recently came back from my son's home in Milton, GA north of Atlanta. We went twice to the Stone House Tap Room. I have the Crabapple, a large, 2 patty smashburger with cheese, sauté onions, lettuce, tomato, etc with order of fries and water for $14.00 then add in tip and tax. Great burger. It's all I can eat and very juicy. We eat there every time I'm in town. Milton is a very nice suburb of Atlanta. I'll try our Buffalo Wild Wings in Hurst, TX this week. Their onion rings look great. BOGO on Mondays and Wednesdays, I'm sold.

There is no freakin’ way I’m dropping a Jackson on a fast food burger. I have no problem with 5 Guy’s quality, but for that money I’ll go sit down and get served. And also, with all those fries PLUS it’s basically carry out, well, you know how long fries last in the bag. Five minutes MAX.

I do see that you got the regular, which is a double; I’ve only ever ordered the little. That would cut the cost by $2.20.

Nice to know about BWW, even though we won’t ever go there. We just have “our places”.

Yeah, Five Guys was good, don’t get me wrong, but the money part was what turns me off about them. DON’T ASK FOR A TIP, just for ordering my damn meal! Offer smaller and cheaper French fry options!

I also only do the littles which saves a bit, but yeah, still pricey. I have not been to my local 5 Guys in several years as we have Culvers.

Not sure if it is still on the menu but B Dub's Big Jack Daddy burger is good too: Beef patty, cheese, pulled pork and onion straws w/ BBQ sauce.

Not a fan of their wings.

EDIT: Apparently BWW removed the Big Jack Daddy Burger from the menu in 2019. I haven't been there in 12 years. If I were to go back it would be for that burger but maybe I'll try the Bacon Hatch burger.

David, weirdly enough it didn’t come with bacon. Their description is a little misleading, I think it’s just smash fried in bacon grease, maybe? Here’s part of their menu description…

The 5 Guys fries thing and overloading the bags is…well their gimmick. For a single individual, it is annoying and way too much but most of the time, I usually order 1-2 fries to split among the 2 or 4 of us so it works out fine.

BWW being the best is a surprise.Yelp is slaughtering the local BWWs with all of them getting 2s.

By the way, did you get two burgers and two onion rings or 2 burgers, one with fries and one with rings?

"Some people" think there are some.... social issues.... and being required to hire folks who were... not their 'usual' wait staff... due to lawsuits... that has errrm... contributed to a downturn in their customer loyalty.

        Maybe that's part of it?

At least I heard of one such location who hired a person they initially turned down due to not being the 'usual' type of wait staff. They got sued, the individual went to work, and business tanked - the store ended up closing.

        So I heard.

The concept’s time has passed. I’ve seen pretty girls before. I’ll see them again.

FWIW, we ate at Hooters maybe twice, both times over 20 years ago. Once was definitely on the boardwalk in AC, I don’t remember where the other one was. Maybe the same, but maybe not. Both times the food was okay for what it was, and the service was professional. But we went because they were the casual sit down restaurant in Tropicana; we didn’t want fancy, and we didn’t want fast, so we went to Hooters.

I've had a burger at a BWW in the Clear Lake area of the Houston 'burbs a number of times, and I agree, really excellent. I had forgotten all about that place until now.

Sorry to hear about the disappointing experience with Five Guys. We order from them regularly, and we both get the "little" bacon cheeseburger and split one regular order of fries, and even that is sometimes more fries than we need if the server was being enthusiastic. Delivered via Doordash it comes out to about 40 bucks, including driver tip (I generally tip the drivers well), and yeah it's a little high for fast food, but they always deliver super fast and nothing beats having a plate of comfort food arriving at your doorstep

Thanks for this burger review series Panhead John! A lot of fun to read

I’ve had Five Guys, and it’s a decent burger. And the fries are good….$5 for the bag of fries to me is worth it…I can’t get enough of those dang things!!

but the one thing that drives me absolutely batty about Five Guys here in New Mexico - home of green chile, home of the green chile cheese burger - they don’t serve green chile. It should be a law in New Mexico if you serve a burger, you have to have green chile!

fun right up PJ! I’ve never been to Cheddars and have only been to BWW a few times. But it’s Always fun to see the places you go for these burgers!

Once again you fling a burger our way from a place I’d never order a burger…Like Hooters, I go to BWW for, well, wings! My boys have ordered burgers there a few times and they say they’re good. I just can’t get myself to order one. Probably because the reason I went there is because I wanted wings.

Cheddars…not only have I never had their burger…
I’ve never even heard of the restaurant! 🤷‍♂️

      Five Guys…
Yes, the small fry is big enough to feed a family of five.
Yes, it’s one of the most expensive fast food burgers I’ve had.

…but those burgers and fries sure are tasty! And while you’re waiting for your food you can have peanuts and dump the shells on the floor. “Free” appetizer AND free rein to make a mess…WIN!

Yeah, sometimes I like to try other things than what a place is known for. It was pure misery going to Hooters…. 🐂💩 I’m gonna take a break from burgers for a while. I would like to visit some wing joints next. Hmm, maybe I’ll visit Hooters for their….wings?

      #15
      Great write-up PJ.
What you need to do now is go to a Culvers and get the single bacon deluxe with rings and a rootbeer. That will put an end to all this other nonsense about who has the best fast food burger. A quick look at the map shows a couple of locations North of Houston, and one to the West. You get the single burger to save room for a turtle sundae.

Panhead John , Culver's is similar to Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, if you've been to one of those, but I think Culver's is quite a bit better. It's easily my favorite fast food burger, and I would take it over most sit down restaurants.
