Attending BBQ Classes Can Be Dangerous

In a two week period I traveled to two different BBQ classes to try and improve my cooking game, one was in NC and one was in Pa.

Attending a class at a BBQ store can get expensive.

The class in NC was a 4 meat class geared toward competition so of course I bought some of the items used, especially with a discount on items used in the class.

The Pa. class was sausage making class, even though I only bought one item that was used in the class many of the rubs, and other items were available for sale.

Not only did I travel almost 900 miles for the classes I spent over $200 on goodies and could have easily spent more.

I have done worse, I left one class with a GMG Trek and another one with over 200lbs of charcoal. I have another one scheduled in May, wonder what I will buy then.

I have pretty much settled on Blues Hog sauces. If you haven't tried them I think you will like them.

I think you are supposed to budget for spending money on the goodies you see at these things. 👍 You know you are going to come home with sump'n.

Carolyn I am doing good if I don't come home towing something...Saturday they had the cooker that is #2 on my dream list and the place last week usually has one in stock...

BKYDBBQ I guess you did good by going home with mostly condiments then.

I see a couple Blues hog have not tried. And the Butcher's rub does not look familiar. GMG Trek that is a small pellet grill? let us know how it performs.Seems like different parts of the country use different rubs. You had a long road trip.

What did you learn the most from the 4 meat BBQ class?

randy.56 The Butcher's Steak and Brisket Rub I was introduced to at my first BBQ class and it is my go to SPG rub, I always have a bottle of it in the everyday spice cabinet.

The GMG Trek is there portable smoker, I bought it a couple of years ago and really like it. Especially since I am often cooking for just me.

The 4 meat class was geared toward competition BBQ, which is something I leaning towards, so I learned alot about seasoning and prep of the meats and the timelines they use.

Good for you. Spend the money and enjoy your hobby. I’ve spent a lot of time and money enjoying my BBQ hobby. It’s been worth it. Drive On!

@TirbleB part of me would like to know how many miles I have driven to attend BBQ classes and events. Including the Meat-Up in NC a couple of years ago.

BKYDBBQ I’ve flown more miles than I’ve driven between competing, being a KCBS judge and going to Meat-ups in Tx and La. Are you going to the Meat-up in San Marcos in April? I’d recommend it if you want to help expand your BBQ skill. The pit masters at most of the BBQ restaurants are happy to share their skills.

TripleB I would love to be at the Meat-Up but I have been roped into a cruise in April. So that rules out anything fun I would want to do in April including a couple of BBQ competitions and the Meat-Up.

You are committed to learning BBQ. It sounds like you regularly enroll in BBQ classes. I look at the new stash of rubs and sauces and wonder what you will do with all the rubs and sauces you already own. LOL

Man, every time I go there I wind up buying rubs and sauces and charcoal. I use the charcoal, but the rubs and sauces just go into the pantry with all the other rubs and sauces. I’d buy a cooker, except I don’t need one, and even if I thought about buying one just for the heck of it, there are other things I’d rather do with the money.

For me, the most valuable thing I can do with money is exchange it for information. I’ve never once regretted that.
