I must say that it was the old BBQ U shows on PBS (circa 2005) that started my interest in good "Q" and before the PIT the BBQ Bible was my go-to - still have a copy
I think (NOT 100%) Back then BBQ U was held at a ski resort that was not too far from northern VA (Wintergreen???) ...either way it is tempting but probably not gonna pull the trigger
We enjoyed a few classes he did for Maryland Public Television when he was doing his Project Smoke and Project Fire programs when MPT was their public tv sponsor. I think they charged something but we got free tickets because of our donation level. Not sure I would fly out and pay for a resort hotel room just to attend a few days BBQ course. I like him but some of his ingredients are not exactly handy to find where we live now.
It is expensive and it is an indulgence to be sure. Much of it is the exotic locations....The Broadmore....the Alisal Guest Ranch, etc.
To be fair, his audience is not us, but the more casual person (with serious money) looking to up their game and perhaps experience various styles of cookers.
In some sense, I think he is his own competition. I've seen every episode of Primal Grill, Project Smoke, Project Fire, and Planet Barbecue multiple times. Even if I had the money....I've seen so much of his work, there might be very little new. (I've seen the menus from past events and they, obviously, draw heavily on his books and shows.)
Still....like you, Steven got me started in BBQ and I've remained a huge fan. It certainly would be fun.
to each his own. there seem to be silver/gold/platinum options for just about everything now. you could probably spend twice that on a fantasy baseball camp with Aaron Judge and pals, or a driving experience at a track with nice cars, or a vineyard, etc. this one is not something i'd "invest" in, but i'm sure there's a niche out there for whom it ticks the boxes, can't blame the guy for tryin!
