Certified Pitmaster is a title held by people who complete a barbecue class. This term became famous in Kansas City, where barbecue classes are offered to teach people the exact techniques used in barbecuing. You can earn a diploma as a Certified Pitmaster by taking a one-day class that lasts about five hours.

I've had 'que made by old guys in a cooker behind a vacant gas station that beat's all the fancy schmancy "masters". Remember when Rodney Scott was "discovered".
In this day and age of the internet and that god forsaken TV network which shall remain nameless the word "master" has lost its luster.

At one time I had no less than 15 industry certifications that would tell you I could build a network by making the glass, stringing the fiber optics across the entire country, build, attach, and configure all the necessary equipment, program the computer servers, and then build the websites while ensuring the entire thing was secure end-to-end. Finally build and configure the wireless, both wi-if and cellular services, building both the phones and the towers.
