I will retire in 6 weeks or so and am thinking it would be fun to participate in a BBQ class that is held over a week-end. I am on the mailing list for BBQ U (but I am not seeing the dates or the price). Myron Mixon is showing slots for 2024!
Dizzy Pig is in Manassas (less then 10 miles from me) so I will most likely go to their Pork class on the 20th of May...still looking for something better/longer
According to the google, there are a ton of hands-on classes you might want to check out. Some may be in a city near you, while others may require some travel/hotel action. Not a lot are full weekends, though. That shouldn't stop you.
One that shows they have classes in multiple cities is BRISKET-U
You might want to check out the ads posted in the BBQ NEWS MAGAZINE (that we get free, courtesy of The Pit) -- latest issue is https://pitmaster.amazingribs.com/fo...ril-2023-issue . We see an ad for BBQ ALLSTARS, for example, which looks like they might offer classes.
Or, depending on what you're looking for --- there's always something along the lines of the GREEN EGG FEST, where lots of folks gather together to show off their Green Egg cooking.
Or maybe reach out to one of the listed BBQ Associations local to you to see if they can recommend a list of classes nearby

Chris Marks of Three Little Pigs fame (Kansas City) does a weekend series of classes a few times a year (Friday and Saturday) at a mom and pop BBQ store on the southeast side of Indianapolis. The place is called BBQ Maestros. It's a cool set up with a big room. BYOB and they serve the food you learn about. Chris is the guy behind The Good One smoker, and BBQ Maestros is a showroom for PK and The Good One cookers. Indy might be too far for you, and that's understandable.
I've taken most of the classes and never once failed to learn a LOT from Chris. He has gotten away from competition BBQ and focuses solely on backyard BBQ for friends and family. Scott Regal is a competition cook who owns BBQ Maestros. These two guys couldn't be nicer people.
Depends on whether you are looking for competition classes or more backyard style classes.
If you are interested in classes to improve your home bbq cooking I recommend Mason Dixon BBQ Services Boot-camp classes. They are located in SW Pennsylvania. I have been to three of their classes and hope to attend one this fall. The classes are hands on to point you get to pick the smoker you want to cook your own piece of meat on. Plus they feed you very well the entire time you are there...
They have not posted their 2023 schedule yet but if you keep an eye on their website you can find the dates. They will fill up quickly...
2.5 hours from Chez Mosca. Might be doable. I’d go for the ribs & chicken; brisket is the most finicky, but I make brisket less than once a year, and I make ribs and chicken constantly throughout the year.
Mosca I have been to the Whole Hog, Hot and Fast Brisket and the Turkey and Tailgate classes. All of them were great, did they cause a radical change in how I cook, no, but i did learn a lot of tips and tricks. Plus I got to try cookers that I have never used before.
Ribs and Chicken is the one I want to attend next...
2nd this suggestion, I did it for my 50th birthday. You do have to sign up early and be on a waiting list. I was far enough back that I assumed I wasn't getting in until the next year, but apparently a lot of people either didn't respond or couldn't make the date when their number came up.
Honestly, any class is a good class! I've taken many classes over the years and have always learned something. I started with Dr. BBQ's class in 2004, my last class was Tuffy Stone/Melissa Cookston (BBQ Allstars) in the Memphis area. Got to say the last class was the best eating class I've taken! That said, if I were that close to Dizzy Pig, I'd definitely be in line for that one! Chris is a friend and I have the honor of being his last graphic arts project. He did the graphics for my BBQ trailer (which has gone on to another person!).
