I’m down for it, particularly when the weather is nicer.

I'll take a shot at it. I'm usually bad at following recipes, except baking then I'm a fanatic, but I'll try it. This sounds like fun. And if SheilaAnn is coordinating, I know I'm safe from bananas and coconuts.

More idle thoughts. Maybe try to have some sort of outdoor cooking element most of the time. Rarely any expensive or hard to find components. I would be interested in curries and more vegetables/fruit (which I should eat more of).

yakima, I would agree with rare expensive or hard to find components. With regard to specifics of modality, would be nice to put no restrictions. Some oven, some open stove, some sous vide, some grill... Variety. Also would consider doing traditional recipes, at least first, which would not usually include curries unless a very basic one. Not gear foods any specific participant would like to "eat more of", but use a variety of what is out there for most of us. I think could be a lot of fun, and a lot of learning and polishing some of the basics.

I completely agree with your entire post.
Just want to acknowledge that this is primarily an outdoor grilling, etc., site.

yakima I dunno, I think AR is much more than that. While many of the topics and recipes are obviously outdoor cooking, we also have subforums for dutch ovens, air fryers, sous vide, ovens, toasters, pressure cookers etc.... and focusing these cook challenges to outdoor only would eliminate many from participation at certain times of the year.

              True.

I might suggest a corollary or spinoff activity, where we choose a week or a month for people to experiment with a single ingredient. Like the curry mentioned above, or saffron, or Szechuan peppercorns or something. See who can come up with the coolest, most unique or most tasty-looking dish from a single minor ingredient.

I'd like to see something like that as an alternate cooking theme.

I'd play. What could go wrong?

You beat me to it Carolyn 🙂 I get similar results making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich using store bought Wonder Bread.

SheilaAnn Just a suggestion, when you roll these out, name the topic something like Team Cook 1 May 25 and then Team Cook 2 April 25 so if it is a success it's easier to look back through them? (If doing them more frequently then consider using 1a 1b for cooks in the same month?)

SheilaAnn If you’re still open to suggestions, here’s a possibility. It looks delicious and is something that might appeal to a large percentage of the group. The ingredients list might look a little long, but most of it is stuff a lot of us already have in the kitchen.

I follow AB too. He has some good southern style dishes.

If you are still taking suggestions, other sites that I've perused have done Cookbook of the Month posts where they pick a cookbook and then people choose whatever recipes interest them and cook/post about it. Obviously the downside is having access to said cookbook, but being the internet is chock full of cooking sites, you can accomplish the same thing by using January is Woks of Life, February is Malcom Reed, etc.

One other suggestion (being you were asking..😉) is that I also like some of the other comments about considering doing something more open ended and seeing what everyone opts for in that topic.

For example, you can choose any general category which can be anything from a particular ingredient (pork shoulder), cooking method or meal type (soup or smoked and braised) or cuisine (Indian, Korean) and then everyone can choose the direction they take with the given theme. If you do that, it would fun seeing what people come up with for each topic and how varied everyone's choices are.
