Problems with adding images - various errors, images hidden, thread updates not showing

I am having a nightmare with inserting images to a post I made - various problems, never consistent and different from every device I access/view the post/thread from.

Sometimes when clicking the Upload Pix button it immediate throws an error saying I have exceeded the maximum number of attachments (see below) and sometimes it doesn't. If it doesn't throw that error, it allows me to upload five images and then insert them into the post, but then throws the error when I try to save the edit.

When the stars had finally aligned and the post was saved with all five images inserted, nobody but me could see them. And what's even weirder is when I accessed the thread from a different browser on a different device as a guest, it was not showing any of the new content - my update, other comments, all not showing on the thread.

I have tried accessing the thread from different browsers, using regular and private modes, different devices, even using a VPN to access from a totally different IP range using a browser that had previously never seen the internet before... nothing seems to work.

I've had this pop up for me numerous times. It usually ends up being a temporary thing. I'm not sure why. It'll happen on multiple posts in a short time (a few minutes), but then an hour later I can go to the same post to add my reply and add as many pictures as needed (I think 10 is the limit?).

I think it's a glitch.

I’ve not had the error code that you are displaying but have had photos inserted into my post that were not visible to others. I could see the photos in my post on my laptop and iPhone but not my iPad. Eventually (next day) go back and edit to re-insert and it worked okay. Have not had a problem for about five months.

Yep. Trial members are currently limited to 1 attachment per post. The glitchy issues I am not sure the cause. I will see if I can get authorization to increase the limit.

Ah, I was wondering if it was based on my account status but I couldn't see anything in the FAQ to suggest there might be a link... did I miss something?

If it's a hard limit based on being a trial member that's totally fine, at least I know about it and can work around it - assuming I'm not going to get my hand slapped for posting multiple times to get a bunch of images in a thread?

What's weirder is/was the post updates... felt like I was in my own little time loop, which again made me question if this was a restrictive measure for trial members.

I could see updates when logged-in, but viewing on a second device as a guest it felt like everything was an hour behind - hard to put an exact number on it though!

I think the limit was a concern with spammer joining as trial and posting a bunch of images. But the limit just means the spammer would post 10 posts (1 attachment each) instead of 1 post (10 attachments). So the premise is not very good.

I went ahead an upped the allowed attachments per post to match regular club members. Which is 12. I will see if the bossed tell me to change it. I suspect not.

Hmmm... images updated, show in thread for me, visit from another browser and nothing is showing up. Forum bug?

I can see/access all the images on their own individual links, so they are definitely being hosted somewhere.

I would need the image links and the link to the affected post or posts. Most likely a caching issue on your browser.

I just got this one trying to paste in an image like I do numerous times a day. I dunno what it's about. I don't NORMALLY upload, I just copy and paste and it works fine. Not on this post, this morning. I tried it with just posting a response, got the error, then just finished the post, and went to edit it and paste in my pic, got the same thing.


<hehe> Matter of fact, pasting this image in to show the error is exactly what I always do. lol. And exactly what errored on the last post. Don't ask me why. Just sharing the experience.

So here is the cause. When you post an image by pasting, it is converted to base64 text. And the image you pasted must have been large enough to go beyond the max post size limit.

That limit is not part of this software, it is a PHP limit setting. I checked that setting and it was at 8M (8 megabytes), which is tiny.

I upped that to 512M.

Ok that is cool. I routinely paste images from my Smugmug site without trouble - but that same image I posted later with no problem. It's just weird, I don't know.

This was caused by the emergency rebuilding of the server a few weeks ago. I just missed a few PHP settings and they were set to the defaults. Which are always low. No worries. Pasting images into the post is fine. It is just that text based form fields cannot post binary data (like images) so they convert them to a text based format.
