Some Of My Pics Not Able To Post Here

In the last few days, I’ve had 3 different pictures I’ve taken that wouldn’t upload to the site. I’m using my iPhone 14 Pro Max for all my pics. I might have figured out my problem, but I’d like to verify with other people here smarter than me with these things, which should be pretty much everyone……In each instance that my pic wouldn’t upload I got this error message….

Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_1769.png Views:	0 Size:	4.16 MB ID:	1465479

There’s a camera setting in the iPhone called Pro RAW. It can be set to 12 MP or 48 MP. I’ve got it set to 48 MP, hoping to get the best clarity/detail in my pics. The file size it says will be approximately 25 MB if set to 12 MP and approximate file size will be 75 MB at 48 MP. raywjohnson or Huskee what is the largest picture file size that can be loaded to our site? Not sure why I’ve gotten this error message 3 times in the last few days and never before. I don’t know if there was a setting I accidentally hit while using my camera or not. I “think” I’ve had it set to 48 MP for a while now. It’s kind of frustrating because I recently did a hot dog cook and my plated pic wouldn’t load to the site, no doubt disappointing the entire Pit….😂

Quick workaround, PJ ... If you've got a really large (hi-rez) pic to post. Just take a screenshot, then edit/crop it in the Photos app down to just the pic that was on screen and upload the (usually much smaller because it's at your screen resolution instead of RAW) cropped pic from Photos to the Pit.

There are other ways, of course ... but this is really quick and doesn't require a whole lot of explicit fiddling with formats and resolutions.

That is a nice workaround, I hadn’t thought of that one!

Shift+CMD+4 if you are on a Mac takes a screen shot of an area you can click & drag the cursor.

I’ve run into this when using camera shots instead of phone or iPad shots. You need to crop the image.

I actually take some care in my shots. Not a lot, but I know when something is right. When I have to trim something I really like, it helps to remember that none of these shots are going to be entered in the Nat Geo awards.

Or, you can save a copy of the pic at 12 MP and post that.

At 48 MP I would be afraid of seeing something in a 🌭 I didn’t want to see 😳

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all your help! This is a little embarrassing but I don’t know how to do any of your suggestions… I’m a complete novice/idiot when it comes to photography. Probably 90% of any pics I take is to post here. Should I just reset my phone camera settings back to 12 MP? I really should go to an Apple Store and take some of their free photography classes.

Just set your phone to 12mp, that is more than enough for forum photos.

Go to the photo gallery, select the photo, select edit, select crop, crop the photo a little bit, then save it. It should upload. If it doesn't, crop a little more. I've had the same problem and that is my work around.
It would probably work fine if you turned off RAW mode since you probably don't do any post production work on your pix.

Thanks JLR! Yeah, I won’t be doing any editing probably. If I do, it would be just simple stuff easily done on the iPad.

Panhead John "RAW" is a file format for photography where the image file saves all of the raw sensor data (hence the term raw), allowing a photographer to use post-processing software to kind of "digitally develop" the image and tweak things extensively after the fact. Unless you are going to pull the images into your computer and edit them in software like Adobe Lightroom, ON1 Photo Raw (what I use) or something similar, *OR* are going to do extensive editing in Photos on your phone/iPad/computer, you probably are not gaining a lot from using the raw file format. And it uses a ton of room compared to the default file format on the iPhone (HEIC).

File sizes for an iPhone image in normal file format (HEIC - Apple's default file format) is 1 to 3 MB. ProRAW 12 is 25MB. ProRaw48 is 75MB. You can do the math and decide how quickly the 75MB ProRaw48 images will eat up your phone and iCloud photo storage...

The easiest solution is to pick up a Sony Mavica from eBay. I guarantee you will have no resolution issues. (Well, you might, but in the other direction....) Don't forget to pick up a USB floppy drive and floppies; you'll need those, too.

(Wow, memories. I taught a class in digital photography in the early 2000s and we had 30 of those things as a class set. The charging rack was impressive....wish I had a photo of that!)

Megapixels is a highly overrated measure of photo quality. A gazillion pixels recorded by crappy cheap optics just gives you a huge crappy photo. When viewed on a small screen like a phone, anything over 1 or 2 megapixels is wasted bytes of storage.

Panhead John These guys have done a great job explaining everything. To my simple mind don’t shoot in RAW unless you are going to do some serious editing or turn you photo into wallpaper. Stay out of the RAW and just go natural. LOL

With the exception of ComfortablyNumb , thanks everyone! Y’all have been a big help. I won’t be doing any extensive, or any for that matter, post photo editing….. So it sounds like I should just turn off RAW mode and my pics will still come out just fine. When I first got this phone, I googled “what camera settings for best photos on iPhone 14” and one of the suggestions was to turn on RAW mode. It did mention it was mainly for post photo editing, but I figured what the hell!

Panhead John John we've blocked you from posting pictures, hate to tell you about it this way but you sorta asked for it with all this pomp and circumstance here.... (I kid, I kid)

Panhead John When you attach a file there’s a show selected option, then when that screen pops up, click the actual size at the bottom, then select a smaller size. You might have to add one at a time, but I have to do that on some photos, especially other sites.
