Suggestion - make comments bump posts?

So right now, topics are only 'bumped' to the top from recent activity if someone adds a new post.

But if someone adds a 'comment' to an older post, the topic doesn't get highlighter or bumped.

I don't know if this is changeable or not, it could be by design, maybe the administrators don't WANT posts bumped by ongoing conversation in the 'comments,' and only by new posts, but I find myself missing a lot of things because posts aren't bumped by comments.

In the comments many people carry on longish conversations, or add lots of helpful tips and hints, etc. New posts are much rarer, it seems to me, and so I have noticed this.

Maybe it's no big deal to anyone else, maybe it's by design, maybe it's not possible due to software limitations. I don't know.

Just a thought, just a suggestion. I primarily surf this site multiple times a day through the "Recent Posts" button, so I miss out on a lot of 'comments'.

I think that's just how vBulletin works. You could subscirbe to any topics which interest you most, then when any new post is made you get an alert.

Yeah, I don't need to do that. A zillion alerts, having to unsubscribe, etc.

I'll be alright, I suppose. Thanks anyways.

The theory is a "reply" (new post) in a topic (thread) is what keeps the conversation going, hence it being bumped. A "comment" is meant to be a sidebar conversation, specific to the particular reply which it was made on, therefore not actually continuing the main conversation. That's the best way I can explain why it works the way it does.

            Disproven theory.

I think it would be better that way. A lot of great conversations are lost in the comments.

Well then retrain yourself to keep the good conversations where they belong!

I think I prefer it the way it is currently. "Comments" naturally tend to go off on some tangent or other when you get several of them on one reply.

True, but it can also allow the thread to evolve into a more advanced creature.

Sorry to say. Having comments bump posts was removed from the software altogether. I guess too many people did not like the feature. It would be nice if there were a "recent comments" feature.

I’ve taken to deciding how my comment affects the topic. If it is just a minor observation, I comment. If it’s larger, I quote, and expound.

That's not what it's about, but nevermind. My question was answered, no biggie. I'm sure I'll forget about this and ask again next year or the year after. lol
