Finally got my FYR grill! It arrived a couple weeks ago, but I didn’t have a chance to set up until yesterday. First impressions are very positive. It was packaged extremely well, there was some slight damage to the box but the packing easily prevented any damage.

Set up was very straightforward, essential just connecting the wheels to the base and placing the Santa Maria on top. They have a video which demonstrates the whole process but it was pretty intuitive without that.

I haven’t had a chance to cook on it yet, but I think it will be a very nice piece of equipment. The grate shape is about a 2:1 ratio rectangle (36x18 ish) which I like. My last Santa Maria was a PK360 with the burn shop attachment. It always felt far too narrow from side to side. The depth of this grate also feels deep enough to be useful.

The crank mechanism also feels nice. The release is a little bit different though so I’ll have to give that some more testing. It looks like it could be operated one-handed pretty easily. But again, I just need to get some more reps with it.

I still have some additional accessories pending shipment. The company was hit with some significant shipping delays due to the tariffs. They’ve been good about communication and getting grills to everybody as quickly as possible. They should be shipping the additional accessories soon. I will add, the grill is completely functional without any of the extra accessories. So I (and all the other backers) will be up and cooking even without them!

I’ll post some pictures here. But I’ll link some videos a little bit later.

Ok, so I finally had the chance to cook on the new grill! I picked up a couple of Wagyu ribeyes that looked incredible, along with some trumpet mushrooms and asparagus. TLDR: it’s a really nice grill to cook on!

Here’s a video I made for Instagram if you want to check it out. I’ll include some still shots here as well.

    The good:

Overall construction is solid and well thought out. The Santa Maria brackets slide in smoothly and stay secure. The crank mechanism is smooth and can be lowered one handed if you go the right touch. The stainless grates are robust, have good spacing, and the 2:1 rectangular setup works great for two-zone cooking with the included dividers. The cooking surface is the plenty of size for my family of four.

The included ash and grate tool is well designed, perfect contour match for scraping grates and moving coals. The front firebox door opens easily exposes the cast iron fire grate with ash trays. That makes cleanup super simple. The side shelves are a good size, fold over to act as a cover when not in use, and the handles are created to function as tool hooks. It’s a clever, functional design.

    The not-so-good:

It’s marketed as a portable Santa Maria setup, but it’s on the heavy side. The wheels are solid, but moving it alone on uneven ground would be tough. I’d estimate it weighs around 120 pounds with the basics. That said, the weight comes from quality materials, and it feels built to last.

I wish there was a brasero option, but it performed well once the fire was going. So perhaps it’s not necessary.

    Things I learned:

I definitely used too big of a fire on my first cook. I could have easily gotten away with fewer coals. Not a big deal since I could raise the grate to control the temp, but the larger fire did make the crank handle pretty hot and the side shelves warmer than I wanted. In the company’s social media videos, their fire seems to be centered instead of offset, so I’ll experiment next time to see which setup I like better.

    Overall:

I really enjoyed cooking on this grill and expect to get a lot of use out of it. I didn’t want another big, boxy grill sitting out, so even though it’s not truly portable, the collapsible design is exactly what I was looking for. These steaks were also delicious, with approvals from my harshest critics (my kids!)
