LOVE Breadmaker's Apprentice. I have Beranbaum's Cake Bible and Pie & Pastry Bible, and have made some great desserts out of them both. What terrific variations on buttercream she has! It can be a bit of a slog to get through her details, but she makes it worth your while.
Baking makes me happy, and you've reminded me that I haven't made a great cake in a while. (Cookies, brownies & pies yes, cake no.) Thank you! I'll have to go through the bookshelves and take some photos of my favorite baking books tomorrow.
I'm still taking baby steps towards making better bread. Simple recipes, simple ingredients, and still only about 75% success rate. The last loaf actually looked and tasted like bread, so that was a win.
I have the Cheese Board Collective Works. I used to play chess with one of the coop owners at the Berkeley Chess Club and later delivered packages to the coop for UPS.
Oh wow. I used to go to the coop a lot back in '83 and '84 when I was a postdoc in Berkeley and was in a lab on that side of campus. Brings back lots of memories.
