Who pays a toll in Houston?? I think I did on Beltway 8 in early 2005. I know I gave money, not sure on the road.

Ah, Wayne Dolcefino, Texas investigating reporting legend. And while he can be overly persistent and aggressive at times (and consequently get himself into a bit of trouble), all those Emmys behind him are real and well-earned.
All of us in the Greater Houston area know the toll road situation is somewhat scammy/scummy, but we love them (well, sorta). From 1998 until 2003, I lived on Beltway 8, paying four tolls a day to get to and from the University. (In 2003, I moved and traded Beltway 8 for I-45.)
I still use Beltway 8 quite a bit. I live southeast of the city proper, so I use it to get to my mom's house (southwest Houston) and my sister's (northwest Houston). I also go out to Sealy quite a bit, so I use it there, too. Here's my usage from the past year.
When my account runs low, they just charge another $40 to my card.
I kinda look the other way on the shenanigans. What am I gonna do, take 610?

There was a legend here in Miami that installed a James Bond license plate flipper on his car. Dude racked up YEARS of free tolls by flipping his plate up at the Sun Pass stations, then flipping it back down.
But he was eventually busted. And the penalty was in the thousands. Multiple thousands. A lot of thousands. More thousands than he paid for the car when it was new.
I know it was wrong, but secretly I was thinking "damn! He got caught!!"
EVERYBODY hates MDX. It is what unites us all in Miami. We all hate the expressway authority.
