You are what you eat: Twins Study on Netflix

Watched a new 4 part series that appeared on Netflix Jan 1. It's a story about a research experiment at Stanford where 21 sets of twins changed their diets for 8 weeks, with one twin eating all vegan and the other having an omnivore diet. The goal was to see how each pair of twins' health-related measurements changed over the 2 months.

It was well done and I binged all four episodes. They covered the unhealthy industries associated with cattle, farmed salmon, and chickens. and the effect on global warming from cattle. (Exceeds by many times the polution form all forms of transportation combined.)

In spite of its agenda, it was well produced and highly informative. One takeaway is to eat smaller portions of steak.

Identical twins change their diet and lifestyle for eight weeks in a unique scientific experiment designed to explore how certain foods impact the body.

You had me right up until that comment about smaller portions of steak. Smaller than what?
Maybe we should grow smaller cows. 😂

      1 pound instead of 2?

Interesting, so we do not have to watch it. Did the twins change ? stay healthy? die? So a 12 oz ribeye is small, don't you agree.

edit: now that I have watched the trailer, got to watch it.

If you were on the vegan diet you need to eat a lot more to gain the same muscle mass as those on the omnivire diet.

Burned through that series in one evening. Very informative. Extremely well done. There are some very intelligence people on there. As we get older, we should pay more attention to our foods we consume. Saying that and I just cooked a brisket, pork belly, ribeye's, eat a lb of bacon a week, keep 10 lbs in the freezer. We all know there is not a fast food joint anywhere that serves food that is good for you.

        Here's just a few take away's.

        Smithfield is owned by China.
        Alzheimer's is not hereditary.
Bacon is in the same processed food category as a hot dog, baloney, lunch meat.
        Cheese is addicting.
It is true vegan is healthier that omnivore. evidence in the test results.
As we mass produce beef, pigs, chicken, Turkey's they load them with items, (chemicals) that are not good for humans.
More methane gas is produced from cattle, that all the automobiles and trucks.

Not going vegan, but making a few healthier lifestyle changes.

If the cow farts are an issue, imagine how many there will be if we stop eating them. So by eating my ribeye, I'm saving the planet according to them, lol.

One last thought. I’ve been around a lot of cattle and I’ve never heard one fart. You would think you would hear one once in a while if they’re that common.

realdocBBQ that's the best one yet!! Cow farts can't be a problem because the dinosaurs farted more (probably) WTF hahaha I'm impressed by the creativity. You were right to be skeptical though: it's cow belches that are the bigger issue, not farts.

If I am what I eat, then I am a brisket, burnt end, pork butt.....

I'm an old fart (not necessarily methane, but it is a component) and in my lifetime pretty much everything I come in contact with has been "proven" to be both good and/or bad for human life. Lord, save me from the self righteous pontificators.

I'll just take a shot at one idea, since it's the one most commented by my fellow Pitsters. Methane is a product of decaying/digested plant material, so vegans produce methane and should probably be legislated out of existence. Let's see how popular that idea is with the hipsters. And I reject their calling me a "climate change denier". I don't deny climate changes (it has always changed).............I ridicule the notion that it's changing is a "crisis".

            Agreed.
I'm well into my 40's and cannot provide a solid number on how many times I've been told eggs are bad, good, bad, good, bad, good, bad, good for me.

Finster - A few years ago during my annual physical, my doctor told me that I was too fat and needed to lose weight. I said to him, "you look a bit chunky yourself Doc, what diet are you on?" He was not happy with me, but it was the end of the weight conversation.

TripleB I once had a doctor who was morbidly obese. Just once. The next day I was looking for a new one.

Sometimes it's good to have a doctor you know shares your struggles, and can identify with the same things you do... but then, everyone wants something different. That's the great thing - not all docs are supermodels and gym rats, or some people would be too intimidated to go to ANY doctor.

Alcohol is bad right? Lot more old drunks than there are old doctors.

I watched some of it. It’s pretty obvious that the producers have an agenda. I just rolled my eyes at the warmal cooling propaganda they were pushing. I certainly don’t disagree that food production in this country is geared exclusively toward profit as opposed to health, and that eating healthy takes a hell of a lot more work than eating unhealthy. Not sure how to change that in a capitalistic society.
I was a bit befuddled that the one guy on the vegan diet wasn’t able to eat enough calories to maintain muscle mass, yet they told him it wasn’t because of the diet. Huh?
probably will rewatch, as I was kinda dozing on and off while it was on

Ok watched it. Totally agree with Finster. Why pit one against the other? Why must there be a good and bad, us and them, etc.? Obviously divisive and presets people to argue rather than discuss. Draws on Emotions rather than critical thought.
