Teaser for Steven Raichlen's new series: Planet Barbecue

Here's the teaser for Steven Raichlen's new PBS series, Planet Barbecue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhorOQRdMcw

It should start airing on PBS (and on the web) in May or June of this year. It is unclear how many episodes it will be, but it will probably follow the Project Smoke & Fire pattern of twelve episodes followed by a "best of" compilation episode.

The show appears to focus on international grilling and will possibly draw heavily from Steven's 2015 book, "Planet Barbecue!"

The show will feature quite a few travel segments along with guest grillers, but its main shooting location is none other than the Spanish Governor's Palace in San Antonio, Texas.

I am sure there will be much -- say it with me! -- cilantro.

This looks like it will be fun.

I love BBQing, just not on screen. Never got into BBQ TV. I also love fishing but don't like to watch fishing. Am I alone in this?

I'm pretty sure I saw this on a Netflix episode of some BBQ challenge: "Okay, y'all, for this next challenge you will be cooking a dish using a live squid, goat livers, and a piquat fruit from Upper Samoa. You'll have 30 minutes to finish. Smokers get smokin'!"

"I don't think that feller's ever smoked a live squid before. Hope he knows to keep it low and slow because otherwise that ain't real BBQ."

"And you know that goat liver's gonna have a gamey flavor if she don't get the right combination of paprika in that dry rub. Oooh. I think she used too much paprika. That's gonna tasty funky."

You are not alone. I can fish for weeks, but I never saw the attraction to watching fishing shows. Same with BBQ. I can watch short YouTube videos, but that's about it.
I also feel this way about baseball. I can't stand to watch it, but go crazy at a game.

Okay, I was good with everything you were saying right up to the baseball part. I’m afraid we can no longer be friends. ;-)

The first episode is slated to air Friday, May 26! This usually means that it will be available on-demand on Maryland Public Television's website the day after.

          This weekend, yall!

Steven Raichlen's Planet Barbecue® is a new TV series that premieres tomorrow on PBS. The series takes an international approach to grilling, exploring the different ways that people cook with fire around the world.

The first episode of Planet Barbecue is live on the web: https://www.pbs.org/video/argentine-fire-qToVsc/

It's entitled Argentine Fire and it is really good.

It includes two meat-centric dishes and one peppers and cheese dish. All three look fantastic. The episode also hits where I think Steven can shine in this era of high-production value Youtube: give me eclectic, yet accessible dishes that if I don't make myself, it gives me an idea to adapt to another recipe.

While it is only one episode so far, it seems extremely well edited. It feels "tighter" than some of the episodes of the last two seasons of Project Fire (in which Steven tried some new things that didn't quite work well). The interactions with the guest flow naturally and don't seem rushed.

            It is definitely worth watching.

I mean, how can you look at this and not want to make it?

Look closely at the crust: it is a meat-crust pizza. The entire crust is a butterflied flank steak.

(Sadly, cilantro did not make an appearance this episode.)

He just started talking and it sounds like his nose is stopped up.

You talk about rapid fire on those sponsors.

Probably a minority opinion, but there’s something about Steven Raichlen that bugs me. I can’t watch him… and I’ll watch almost any cooking video on YouTube.

By-product of the Keto/Carnivore Craze. A local pizza chain near me makes a pizza with a crust made of Italian sausage.

Well, sadly Alabama public TV does not show it in their schedule for May or June. Still random reruns of Project Smoke and Project Fire, at odd hours like midnight and 2pm.

It can be watched from the PBS website too - just not on my local PBS stations on the TV.

Yeah, my local PBS doesn't carry it either.

You know, this is weird. I'm in the 4th-5th-or-6th largest PBS market and I don't see it either. That is very strange. It is reruns of Project Smoke and Fire. Perhaps they are waiting to run one of those out before starting to air it.

.....update: I just checked WTTW's (Chicago) schedule and they aren't airing the first episode until this Saturday, June 3rd. That is interesting as for the past five years, the on-demand version was always available only after the first airing. (This is also the first time that WTTW is producing the show; Project Smoke and Fire were produced by MPT in Boston, so that may have something to do with it.

WTTW also has the episode list online: https://schedule.wttw.com/series/358...anet-Barbecue/

Curiously, it only lists seven episodes. I hope that is just a partial listing. Primal Grill, Project Smoke, and Project Fire were always 13 episodes a season.

(If you can't tell, my previous work at a PBS station and background in video production has me perhaps a bit too interested in his shows lol.)

It looks like it will be a ten-episode season, three episodes shorter than the norm. The tenth episode, given it has no details, may be a "best of" episode, just like has always happened in the previous series.

Here is the episode list for the episodes after Argentine Fire (air dates seem to be a week early).
