    Masterchef fusion cooking episode

FIRST, kudos for finally showing cooking contestarts using thermometers to temp their dishes.

in this episode, the contestants had to fuse southern cooking with international flavors. Some of the dishes look/sound kinda interesting.

    excepct one.

GENERAL TSAO’S CHICKEN AND WAFFLES as a representative of Chinese fusion is just plain wrong.

It looks fantastic, we’re sure the flavors are terrific.

but General Tsaos Chicken was invented in New York City. It’s 100% an American dish, even though it’s been adopted by Chinese restaurants everywhere.

when you have a chance, watch the documentary, SEARCH FOR GENERAL TSAO. We believe it’s available on Amazon Prime.

Not that it matters greatly, but it is General Tso’s chicken. The general was a real guy & he didn’t take kindly to chicken actually. He was more inclined toward pork. He would have a personal chef prepare his meals as most generals do. But in this case when he was in the battle field he did need assistance cuz he wuz a little guy actually. Back in his day most Chinese were of smaller stature. When he was in combat they gave him Chinese soap box made of bamboo. When he sat for dinner he had to sit on a phone book, cuz he wuz
    only tso high.

I think of General Tso's as fusion in the first place, so isn't that fair game for fusion cooking?

To be fair, we do enjoy a good generals chicken. Just found it amusing that the contestant, unbeknownst to them when they decided to pull the dish together, went for something not traditionally considered authentic Chinese cuisine

Really, you just had to deflate my bubble with ". . . General Tsaos Chicken was invented in New York City. It’s 100% an American dish, even though it’s been adopted by Chinese restaurants everywhere." New York City!
And the Fortune Cookie comes from San Francisco, so there.

New York City -- that's where the best salsa is from, right?

See, some of ya may have doubted me. The General was a real guy and he probably "never ate" anything like whut is done today. And he wuz short, cuz he was Chinese & lived many moons (a little Indian logo there) ago. Don’t ya just love history. Tso interesting!
