Last weekend's Wall Street Journal (May 20-21) contains an article on grills and grilling in the Off Duty section ("The Only Grill You'll Ever Need Is Less Than $200"). It features the Weber kettle and quotes from various sages touting it, including Meathead. As a Performer owner, and as a public service, I'll be happy to take all those other, useless, cookers off your hands freight prepaid for a nominal fee. You can thank me later.

- If not cooking outdoors, I am cooking on the stovetop with my 14" carbon steel wok, 12" CI skillet, or in the oven with my two Lodge CI pizza pans, or two dutch ovens. I've also got a nifty Lodge carbon steel grill pan that rocks for veggies outdoors.
Well, sadly, it's gotten hard to even find a new Weber kettle for under $200! Their prices have gone up up up over the past several years, and I think one with the ash catcher mechanism starts around $239 last time I looked in a big box store.
I fully agree, and if I could only have ONE of my grills, I would likely keep the Weber Performer, even over my kamado, due to the flexibility and accessories it offers. However, I am not convinced the general public wants to deal with the "hassle" of charcoal grills - startup time, cleanup, etc.
The lack of grilling know how or patience is why my son found one of those $239 Weber premium 22" kettles sitting on the side of the road in his neighborhood. When I went over to see his "find", it appeared to have not been used more than twice before someone tossed it out. He found a Blackstone 36" griddle with hinged lid on the same street, on the curb. It had surface rust on the griddle and lid. Easy fixes with some elbow grease and a can of spray paint for the lid. Folks just don't know how to care for the grills I think...

HawkerXP ain't that the truth!
fkrall yes for me, and one of my son-in-laws, and my son, charcoal is well worth the hassle. I cannot think of anyone else in the in-town extended family that has anything other than a gas grill however. Even my son uses his gas grill more than the kettle. He is using the kettle as a smoker with the snake method more than as a grill. Haha - yeah, these were both literally within walking distance of his house, and he just rolled them down the street.
