What's Better Than Buying A Traeger?

A free Traeger! On my way back from Alpine I stopped at my aunt's ranch for a quick "Hello". Her friend's son is helping with the ranch and as we talked about grilling he offered me a free Traeger that he doesn't use. So I followed him to his place 30 miles away and threw it in back of the SUV.

Model BBQ155.01 - used but in really good shape, its a dry climate out there. The shelf brackets were both bent but several hits with a hammer and a little bending with vice grips fixed that.

Free is always the best. I don’t think I’ll ever own a pellet grill, but if someone offered me one for free…..well I believe I’d take it.

TripleB ecowper My post title is a little tongue-in-cheek since I never planned on buying a Traeger. I decided that if I ever go the pellet grill route I would look into LSG or Yoder but 'free' wins every time.

That's great - free is hard to beat.

Free ain't free if you have to replace the motor, auger, fans, controller. Reason I got rid of mine. But hey celebrate the win, maybe you'll get lucky, they are convenient.

Everything worked when I tested it, I'm cooking some quail tonight - we'll see how it does.

              First cook:

Stuffed quail from a store in Louisiana. Turned out really good although I faced a bit of a learning curve with temperature regulation.

I think I need to adjust the P value (speed of the auger cycle). There was a lag in the temperature reading from the RTD sensor, the cooking surface would shoot way up compared to the reading on the control panel (I was using my SnS-500 four probe thermometer). I started by setting the machine low to get some smoke. When I raised the temperature the cooking grate got to 425o (and kept going up) while the reading on the control panel was still around 280o

Also, it was 20 degrees or more hotter at the front right than at the middle rear.

Still turned out great, surprisingly nice smoke flavor for such a quick cook.

I have been watching your free additions of cookers. I am sure you haven’t yet reached Mr. Bones’ collection of cookers, but you are moving in that direction. I find it a lot easier to add than subtract. Good luck finding space for this new addition.

I have that exact same model, mine was my first smoker and it works ok, it is also very tippy so be careful moving it on uneven ground. Good luck.

What a great way to learn whether you're a pellet cooker fan or not. I bet your aunt was happy that you got an extra bonus on the trip to visit her. Enjoy playing with your new old toy.
