    Traeger error codes

Just the other evening, I mentioned to SWMBO that I was going to keep an eye out for a pellet grill…mostly because I’ve never had one.

Today, I was peacefully minding my own business, innocently scrolling through Marketplace when I see this:

Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_0826.png Views:	0 Size:	3.90 MB ID:	1485770

    Here is the description:
    ————————————
Used Trager Pro Series 34. Currently showing LeR code most of time when smoking. Replaced auger motor, hot rod, control panel fuse. Recommend only using trager brand pellets,...

    ————————————

    The temptation is strong.

How big of a red flag is that LeR code? He says it still functions, the code just displays if it doesn’t come to temp within 5 minutes.

I'm also a little concerned about the tangle of wires that’s visible to the left of the shelf…

I’ve messaged him. I’m going to look at it tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks in advance for the restrained, thoroughly deliberated advice on whether or not this is a good deal.😁

Honestly take that 125 and throw it towards something brand new on fall clearance, lots of good deals to be had on pellet grills over the next few weeks.

+1. You can get something brand new for a few hundred, and then you won't have to worry about any previous owner problems. You get what you pay for...

I would be concerned about the tangle of wires. Maybe the wires need to be dressed up.
I suggest running it through a cycle before buying.

As a Treager owner and a pellet head myself, I cooked some very good rack ribs and a spatchcocked chicken in the lowest cost entry lever pit boss.

Buy new ones and you get a warranty.

Thanks, folks. That was the dose of reality I needed.

I must admit, though, I’m not sure I expected “don’t buy it.” to be the consensus statement from the Pit.

      Again, thanks.

Charcoal smokers are relatively simple and can be easy to fix and find new parts. But for pellets, it can be complicated and many parts have already been replaced which is a big red flag. Why wouldn’t Traeger just replace the whole unit? No need to acquire someone else’s huge problem.

Oh we aren't saying don't buy anything, just don't buy that thing

Buying someone else’s headache turns into a migraine. If $125 and a bunch of labor is easier for you than $300-400 and probably no headaches than don’t write it off. However, from the description, they’ve probably already been working with Traeger to solve the problem and throwing money at numerous parts. Even if it’s a different Traeger, this is the season of deals.

Oh heck, buy it. Then you will be able to write a whole, slew of posts about your efforts to fix it and all the money you’ve thrown at it. It might turn out to be a PITA for you, but it should make for good reading (and a cautionary tale) for the rest of us.
