PSA: put your food in your cold pellet cooker, regardless of brand. That start-up smoke is valuable!

      That said, smoking's bad, mmkay?

Owners manual in Yoder says not to do that. I'm not sure if it messes with the controller or not. Lots of smoke though.

captainlee they say that so you don't load it up with 300lbs of stuff and the controller can't get it up to temp and it creates a giant problem. But trust me, unless you overload it you can do that.

Environmental tip: It is better to recycle all your Amazon boxes than burn them in your pellet smoker.🙂

I always wondered if the ideal pellet smoking design would be a unit with 2 fire pots running on alternate cycles so you get max smoke the entire time

              So, you’re a stick burner!

People are in competitions with pellet smokers, successfully. A good pit master should be able to make anything work. If I worried about what is the ultimate best to the exclusion of all else, I would have a stick burner but that is just not practical for me at this point. There are always trade offs. And, 95% of perfect is ok most of the time.

I've judged over 35 comps and I always walk around before and after judging. I think I've only seen one or two pellet smokers in competition. But I'd admit, I'm not looking for pellet smokers so maybe I just missed them. I've seen a big upswing in KBQ's and USD's. Especially USDs. The J3 and J5 Jambos are still the prettiest smoker out there. But like you said, it's all good.

Most are not pellet smokers in the master series comps, but yes there are some. There are a lot more in the back yard comps. That does tell us something, but I cooked last year with a team that used pellet smokers and placed in back yard. I am about where you are judging, 44 comps plus a bunch of other related events, and I also like to look around. Great time to get ideas.
