Am i reading it right that it looks like they took the grants from the state and hired people and then basically laid them off when they expired?

New grills are not at the top of the list in many family budgets…
When I read articles saying 40% of Americans currently have $0 left after paying bills, it’s easy to see how wagyu and $5000 grills are on hold in many households…

I mean... that's not new (presuming it's accurate). People complain about inflation but it's not like things doubled in price in the last few months. It's just that wages have lagged for, well, generations.

rickgregory Your comment about wages lagging for generations is certainly not valid.
Are you telling us that you make (or made) the same income as your father, grandpa, and greatgrandpa? You know that is not true.

Clark. I'm talking about real (inflation adjusted) wages, not nominal wages. Real wages (the blue line below) have been flat for the last 50 years. Yes, *nominal wages* have grown, but they don't buy more than they did 50 years ago. But we grew productivity at such a a high clip how could this be? Ahem... The top 1% of Americans have about 16 times more wealth than the bottom (https://www.cnbc.com/2021/06/23/how-...cans-have.html)

Chicken feed and home grilling costs have gone up substantially during this pandemic period…
I was not surprised when I read the article about Weber sales being down, earlier this week…
Seed and fertilizer, natural gas for stoves and grills, used cars all have gone up exponentially… In stores, don’t see the grill selection I’m used to seeing, I think the larger stores that must account for a lot of grill sales want you to order online, so they’re not stuck with inventory…Last edited by Washblue; July 27, 2022, 08:07 PM.

Because sometimes news articles can be amusing.
This article from CNBC from Jul 2nd says....
Outdoor cooking boomed during the pandemic, and Weber, Traeger and the grilling industry think it will stay hot- Since July 2020, more than 21 million grills and smokers have been purchased by U.S. consumers, according to data from NPD. The outdoor cooking industry’s revenue grew to $6.1 billion in sales in 2021, a 14% year-over-year growth.
- An estimated 70% of U.S. households now own at least one grill or smoker, according to consumer research from the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA), the highest the industry group has ever seen
- Nearly every type of grill has seen sales jump, from traditional charcoal and gas grills from companies like Weber and Char-Griller, to pellet grills and smokers from companies like Traeger and Masterbuilt. The embrace of outdoor cooking also further elevated products like Ooni outdoor pizza ovens and Blackstone gas griddles.
- But that also led to a market saturated with new grill owners less likely to look for upgrades or replacements. Roughly 38% of all grill owners purchased a new grill in the last two years

That 70% number is stunning if accurate. When you consider there are some number who live in places that won't support outdoor cooking equipment (high rises, condos, etc) and the disinterested (eek!) that could realistically be full saturation except for replacement needs.......or MCS.

I knew the level of ownership in the US is high so 70% doesn’t actually surprise me. The surprising figure is 38% of owners bought a new grill in the last two years. That is a massive pull forward in demand that may take years to work off, which is why the poorly prepared folks are laying people off now.
