researching a big move from charcoal to pellet smoker and gas grill. Everyone raves about Rec Tec quality here, but will it suffice for grilling for a couple months until I can bring home a nice gasser?

I have an RT-680...keep your charcoal until you get the gasser (if you must go away from charcoal). The rec tec is awesome for convenient smoking and reverse searing your thicker cuts. But IMO they'll never match the flavor of flame for a nice sear.
