Anyone mixed wood chips in with the pellets?

I have an older model 590, just recently got the itch to cook again. I saw on YouTube someone running their Lone Star grill with a mix of chips and pellets. Curious if anyone has been bold enough to try it on their Rec Tec?

I have a 700 that I love. I have never tried this and I never will. Not worth the risk of burn back or some other catastrophe in my opinion.

I don't remember what type of auger the RT's have, but you would want to use the chips from LSG as they are sized for their auger (no large chunks) if you wanted to risk it. Only 3 things can happen really...

      1. It works
      2. You jam your auger and have to remove it, on my MAK it's not overly difficult but can be frustrating
      3. You burn out your auger motor after walking away and not noticing it jammed

IMO you would get a similar result just throwing a larger chunk of wood on top of your deflector plate, the heavier smoke only matters for the first part of the cook anyway. Or snag a Heavy D that saddles your firepot and holds a few chunks.

Seems like a great way to mess up your smoker…

If he saw it on Youtube, it must be true.

LSG does have wood chips you can mix with pellets, for THEIR grills

Use a smoke tube if you want more smoke. Don't mess with your auger or as mentioned burn back.

I would not add wood chips to pellets for a pellet grill.
No don't do it, in IMHO. Auger jam.

I'd just build something to hold a wood chunk or two. I got 3/16", 2" square tubing and a drill press that would love to drilleth.

Yeah. Just asking for trouble here. I would not do it.

You can probably find one of my first posts on this forum addressing this exact thing. I use wood chunks, not chips, and not in the hopper, but on top of the heat shield. The add the smoke that is sometimes missing on a pellet smoker. I also have the RT-590, and have been doing this for years. The suggestion even came from the RT guys themselves. While it is a bit of a pain, if you set it up beforehand, it isn't too terrible.

Yes. I bust up chunks into tinier chunks and do this, or put them on top of the burn pot's shield but under the main heat deflector. Works great. It can be cumbersome to do it and for cleanup but worth it in my opinion.

I mix in wood chips with pellets in my smoke tube.

Likewise in my smoke tube and also in my Fyra pizza oven.

The first thing I learned to get good smoke from was a fist sized chunk of pecan double wrapped in foil with 2 holes poked it. Make holes like you had punctured it with a 16 penny nail. It will give you great smoke with no flame and no fuss. When it cools you can unwrap it and have a chunk of lump charcoal.

I haven't tried that. My concerns would be auger jamming, flameouts, or back burning into the auger. Other, less risky, options for adding more smoke have already been suggested.
