I re-purposed a small charcoal basket, wrapped with foil to keep the ash manageable, put in some cut bourbon barrel staves, threw some lit lump on top ... and voila! Great charlcoal smoke flavor on my mak pellet grill. My Turkey got rave reviews.
The smoke from that and what normally comes from pellets provided an excellent smoke profile.
Some, yes. I will put everything on, start the grill, and start the lump charcoal. By the time the lump is ready the grill is well on it's way. I had no issues maintaining temps. The temp on this cook was 325 F. For a lower temp cook I would probably make a smaller fire with the charcoal and wood. If anyone is interested this basket of charcoal and wood lasted about an hour to an hour and a half. I added a little more wood when it no longer smoked.
