As an engineer, hearing reports of two of the ‘slide n grill’ models form Camp Chef with this problem, it makes me wonder if the holes in the heat shield that you open up when you slide the lever to open them are leaking heat. Makes sense that holes that open and close are more likely to let heat through than a solid baffle plate would...

FlipprDolphin not questioning that you had the lever in the right place, but speculating that Campchef made it with leaks in the diffuser.

I think so too. I might just return the replacement to the store and get a GMG. I really did like the ash clean out though

You bought the SG model. The DLX or one of the standard models have a solid drip tray. I think the slotted one is causing the burn issue. I had an SE model (cheap version of the DLX), and never burnt any food on it.

You could try putting foil on the slotted tray, covering the slots

Thinking of returning it for a GMG. $500 with wifi now. Choices choices... I already have a Savannah stoker for my CC too

One thing I don't see mentioned (I may have missed it), have you foiled the interior of your cooker? It seems a lot of the brands are super picky about foil and it has to be "just right" or not used at all. I would like to think it can't be a design problem or everyone would have the same issue. Maybe try a raised rack or something when doing brisket?
